Ya know, when a few people balked about nativity scenes, and religious figures, I thought it would be a passing phase.NO one EVER complains about the Jewish religion being displayed, or the the Kwanzaa decor ect.. It seems to me, that if people want to spread a little good cheer, no matter who or what they believe in, would it REALLY be that big of a deal? These people just want to show their x-mas spirit. Are they really bad people for wanted others to participate? I only wish our block would have something that we can all come together for-Im not seeing that as a "BAD" thing- no matter how gaudy or stupid some people may think...Stop being jerks to your fellow neighbors, and just try to come together, even if it is only for this short season!!!
Please show me where you see blocks of Kwanza decoration and where they force all non Kwanza celebrating neighbors to do the same. What a dumb@ss comment. If thats the best you can do, please turn off your computer and walk away or better yet buy my Kwanza or Jewish decoration for my yard and my entire neighbors and put it up since your obviously tolerant of other religions.

This is amazing to me, one person who surely is not alone in her thoughts, chooses not to decorate and people bash her trying to instill their opinions/thoughts/ideas onto her as to what the holidays should be and what 'community' is? The holidays should be about spending time with family not how many decorations one CHOOSES to put out. Just as those have the right to spend over a $1,000 in decorations, others have the right not to.

Deb--if YOU want to put up something, knock yourself out. BUT, don't castigate your neighbor, if he or she does NOT. it's their RIGHT.
Get it?
Good grief! Get over yourselves.
If putting up 2 stupid candy canes is that big a deal for you to show your neighbors you want to participate in something thats apparently very important to THEM, I really feel sorry for you- its stupid ignorant people like you that ruin every x-mas, or other Holiday for others.Get over YOURSELF-and try thinking about others for a change- GOD bless, AND MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone

YOU'D better watch out. Enough of the crappy (nonexistent) proofreading on the Trib site. It's all over the place. It's okay if commenters make grammatical and spelling errors. They're not getting paid for their writing.

"On South Elgin's Juniper Lane, the Christmas displays cause monthly electrical bills to increase by $200, residents say."

Maybe Rebekah doesn't have - or feel like spending - an extra $200 on an electric bill.(And even if it's not $200 where she lives, the bill will still go up.) Frankly, I think it's ridiculous that these people bully their neighbors into such an obscenely tacky and expensive practice. Some of those displays were the creepiest things I've ever seen.

Good for you, Rebekah!!

Debbie (and all the others), perhaps you don't understand the concept of individualism. It's one of the fundamental concepts underlying our republic. Among other things, it means that you, I, and everyone else has the right to celebrate or not celebrate holidays the way we want to, not the way someone else wants us to. If Rebekah doesn't want candy canes on her front yard, then she doesn't need to put them there. She lives on a city block, not an association. Her front yard is hers, and isn't common property. Try as you might, you won't find a city code mandating holiday decorations of any sort.

Jesus, whom we attempt to commemorate at this time of year would weap if he saw what we are doing to the earth that has been given to us. The world was a gift of beauty and harmony and we have pooped all over it with energy waste, in the name of Christmas.
I'm ashamed to think of what future generations will think of us, when they tell stories about how excessively we lived.
Bravo to those who don't put up the excessive lights, they are forward thinkers!
"global warming confirmed caused by human activity"??

I must have missed the conclusive evidence!! It's a theory, but it has not been confirmed!!

To have some credability tell me how big your house is, how many TVs, how many granite counter tops, how many cars, etc you have. Do you really walk your talk?

BTW, the harmony ended in the Garden of Eden.

BTW, I have the same number of Christmas lights that Jesus did (0), but do celebrate the real Christmas.

i love all the city folks who "talk" about wasted energy. yet, your cell phones, ipods, laptops which are used on a daily basis don't seem to be put on the backburner... ever!!! and your city busses, sooo gross. i live in a mountain commumity where we have a huge christmas tree in the center of town, with lots and lots of lights. myself along with everyone i know, recycles everything we can (this includes coffee grounds, orange peel and egg shells to go back to the earth.) as for the rest of you people you need to walk the walk, not talk the talk.

after all we are talking about TWO SMALL CANDY CANES, not a baby jesus. i'm sure there are a few individuals in every faith who enjoy a candy cane now and then.

again, that fountain... the definition of tacky!!!!!!! get a hobby rebekah. i hope you find true happiness one day... so sad.

your all a bunch of fools really does it really matter to you if Rebekah does or does not put up candy canes? Does it mean she does not have TRUE HAPPINESS? WHAT? come on are we all two years old on here? Maybe we dont understand the true meaning of CHRISTmas ? maybe huh?

Good for Rebekah for being an individual! Those forced communal candy canes do sound awfully tacky and I would not want to have them up in my yard.

The energy cost is a valid issue. There are a lot of people who are struggling to make it this time of the year and many of them cannot afford that $200 extra for their energy bill simply in the name of social conformity.

The decorations might be chess, but the children love and it brings a little bit of joy and cheer to people. Jesus would love to see the neighborhoods coming together in celebration. We live in a country who is took quick deny Christianity, I mean come on we blast politicians for having a Christmas tree an angel or a cross in an add. I feel there are too many scrooges and if you celebrate Christmas it is alright to say Merry Christmas, happy holidays is cheesy and if you celebrate Hanukah then say Happy Hanukah! I wish you all a Merry Christmas!
I think Jesus would be horrified with what some do with this holiday or the hatred that some Christians show toward all mankind. Yes, Christians are not alone in their hatred but I am addressing you. And there is no reason to say Merry Christmas to a non-Christian, it cheapens it and can sound like you think you are the only religion on earth.

Jesus would not like to see himself on a cross...you and some of yours thought of that. I believe Jesus would have preferred to live out his life teaching love.

Judaism doesn't expect lights beyond that of the candles and that is suppose to be, if you choose, to let it shine in the window of your house.

I'm a bit shocked at all the attacks on people who won't participate going on in this forum. What if you're not Christian? I'm dismayed to think of the persecution that a Muslim or Jewish family might face if they moved into one of these communities. Also, what if you are part of a branch of Christianity that shuns such displays?

I'm a little late in replying, but, Deb, if you happen to be creeping about, let me repeat myself, SLOWLY, so that even your little reptile brain can comprehend:

YOU can put up decorations, if you like. No one can deny you that.

BUT...

If others choose NOT to do the same, you have no right to go about, sounding like a petulant 5-year-old, who has been told by Mommy that, no, she cannot have any more candy.

Or, if I don't want to put up a "stupid candy cane", that's MY business. Stay in yours.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and I hope you're having a good time in cleveland, with your own candy canes :-)

Oh yeah, Debbie, sorry about the "Cleveland" thing---your ISP is probably based there. My bad.

By the way, you sound like you're not over eighteen, yet. Perhaps a little more of living will open your eyes wider to the larger world out there, and give rise to the realization that it isn't all about you, and what you think.

I'd put the canes up if the neighborhood wanted to pay my mortgage, home owner's insurance and electricity for the month.

Freaking-psycho Christmas nazis!
