No surprise. The village of Schiller Park has been mobbed up since the 1950's.

What do you mean the suburbs don't have crime? I thought living in the suburbs is safer than the city.

Crime happens everywhere no matter where you live.

The real question is that since we hear of so many of these instances (i.e. there was one a couple of months ago in Glenview) why do salespeople carry millions of dollars of jewels around? A few samples should be sufficient. Deliver the rest by armored courier.

If they can't figure that out, this becomes a risk of the trade, and ceases to be newsworthy.

Why would you stay at that hotel in the heart of outfit guys and wanna be's? Really? Lets walk around with 1.5 million in goods in an area known for OC and gangs.

You people who have commented sound like the victim was at fault. It's to bad the victim wasn't armed and was able to kill the four offenders. That would be great reading.

He should have gotten a room somewhere near the place he was showing his jewelry, I know there's hotels w/security around Oak & Michigan. Too bad, hope it was insured.

What is with these jewelry dealers that drive around with all this jewlelry? And then staying on Mannheim road? Are you kidding me?

This thing happens frequently to these "dealers." Maybe stay in a nice hotel in the city and dont walk around with all the the goods in a "briefcase"? Just a thought.

Put the two together, and you have what is known in the insurance industry as a "moral risk."

I am sure he was just staying in Schiller Park because it was close to the airport. He was from Florida and probably went on a website to book a hotel near the airport and probably does not know the area. But I would not be walking around unarmed and without security with that much value anywhere in the world.

He was careless. But it sounds like this was planned or they were following him and knew what was in the briefcases. Maybe someone at the show or working there tipped the perpetrators off.

Did anyone not read this was most likely done by a professional crew? It had nothing to do with that neighborhood. The robbers most likely followed him from Florida.

This is just too fishy. No legitimate dealer walks around with this much merchandise, alone, in a bad area.
