Struck motorist chases truck 15 miles
By Shawn Cohen spcohen@lohud.com August 27, 2009

SCARSDALE - Frank Canale wasn't planning to go to Angel Matailo's house on Saturday.

triggerAd(1,PaginationPage,12) ;
The 83-year-old Scarsdale resident was driving to a friend's wedding in Newburgh. He was on Interstate 684 in Southeast when another motorist smashed into his car from behind.
As his daughter called police, Canale stepped on the gas.
He chased the pickup truck for 15 miles across state lines, weaving through traffic onto side streets, even running a red light as he pursued the truck all the way to Matailo's home in Danbury, Conn., staying there until police arrived.
Thinking back to Saturday's wild ride, Canale said he regrets nothing because it led to the arrest of a driver who is alleged to have had no license and a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit.
"I missed the wedding, but it was worth it to me," said Canale, a retired builder. "I wasn't going to let that guy get away. He could have killed someone."
Matailo, 35, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and without a license, both misdemeanors.
Danbury police credited Canale for the assist.
It's nothing Canale could have anticipated early Saturday evening as he headed to the wedding near Newburgh with his 50-year-old daughter, Lori Canale-Smith of Pleasantville. The pickup, coming from behind, smashed his bumper, then continued on the highway, he said.
"You'd think we were standing still the way he hit me," Canale said. "He knocked the hell out of us. Then he was trying to get away. I honked my horn, but he wouldn't stop. I had to keep chasing him."
His daughter grabbed her cell phone and called 911, reaching New York State Police before getting switched to Connecticut, then Danbury police as the chase continued onto Interstate 84 into Danbury.
"He started taking us through a maze of streets," the daughter explained. "Naturally, when he ran a red light, we had to do the same, endangering us even more."
The truck wound through the city before pulling into Matailo's driveway.
"He was circling around, trying to shake us," she said.
After the truck stopped, a young man, perhaps a teen, ran from the vehicle, Canale-Smith said. Her father then confronted Matailo, who he said admitted to him that he had been drinking.
Officers arrived soon after.
Capt. Thomas Wendel of the Danbury police said Matailo failed field-sobriety tests and his blood-alcohol level exceeded 0.20 percent. They took him away in handcuffs.
Canale and his daughter went to police stations in Danbury and New York to file reports.
"So much for the reception - we missed the wedding altogether!" Canale-Smith wrote in an e-mail to friends.
Wendel said it's increasingly common for motorists to call 911 to report erratic drivers - and to follow them. That's all right, he said, as long as they obey traffic laws and don't try to stop or confront the errant driver.
Canale-Smith defended her father's actions.
"I think it was the right thing to do because the police weren't coming to where we were," she said. "Our concern was that he was really going to hurt someone else.... Given the same circumstances again, I think we'd do exactly the same thing."

THe readers comments say it all.

Wanna guess why he has no licence?

Thanks for posting the whole article. I knew the perp was an illegal alien Latino since the NT refused to report the facts because it conflicts with their agenda.

Danbury has slid into a Third-World abyss thanks to the feckless moron in City Hall, the greedy contractors who hire the Third-Worlders, and the Marxist illegal alien activists.

only problem with this scenario is that the 83 year old also broke the law in running red lights to follow this looney toon. He could have killed someone also in his zealousness to follow this guy. If he had no one would be cheering him. I am glad the drunk driver is off the road.

The story said he ran just ONE red light. Not multiple red lights, as you put it.

The 83 yo driver has prob been driving for 60+ years. Thats a LOT of road experience. He is a HERO.
Lets see if the NT follows this story further and can determine the drunken drivers 'legal' status in OUR country. Almost certain he is another illegal alien who flips his middle finger at America and all of you.

Driver in deadly Taconic crash Diane Schuler was drunk, had marijuana in system

Cops Tuesday painted a mind-boggling picture of death driver Diane Schuler — guzzling vodka and smoking pot with helpless kids in tow before the horrific Taconic State Parkway crash.

The 36-year-old mom drank so much she could barely see. She still had alcohol in her stomach when she crashed, killing herself, her daughter, three nieces and three men in an SUV she hit, police said.

Toxicology tests did not show what she drank, but a jumbo 1.75-liter bottle of Absolut vodka was found in the wreckage of her Ford Windstar minivan.

She consumed at least 10 ounces of liquor during the reckless 90-mile drive from a campground in Sullivan County to Briarcliff Manor in Westchester County, police said.

She smoked pot within an hour of driving the wrong way on the Taconic heading home to Long Island, police said.

The revelations brought outrage from the family of the men killed in the SUV — but silence from Schuler’s relatives.

"I’m stunned that anybody would do that with kids in the car," said Robert Guzzo, whose brother-in-law and father-in-law were killed. "I'm very angry. This was not an accident ; it was a murder."

The July26 crash was ruled a homicide and referred to the Westchester County district attorney, but police don't expect charges.

8/27/2009 7:29:54 AM This is exactly what we need here , a vigilante in taking back what we all worked hard for. Many people migrate to this country without having a full understanding of our rules and regulation that govern our law abiding citizens. This is exactly why the lawyers stay busy , its because we at tax payers expense have to pay exorbinent amounts of money to explain the laws to them in their language. So , essentially what is comes down to is , we are accomodating them in our house. Their mentality coming here from what ever country they come from , not being able to turn right on red tells me one of three things. Either they are drunk , they dont read , or they are affraid to make a turn on red because they dont have a liscense . WAKE UP THE POLITICIANS AND START CALLING THEM . ASK THEM HOW THEY WISH TO DEAL WITH THIS CRISES THAT IS COSTING AMERICA A MULTITUDE OF ISSUES. obobo

Attorney: FBI trained NJ blogger to incite others

HARTFORD, Conn.— A New Jersey blogger facing charges in two states for allegedly making threats against lawmakers and judges was trained by the FBI on how to be deliberately provocative, his attorney said Tuesday.

Hal Turner worked for the FBI from 2002 to 2007 as an "agent provocateur" and was taught by the agency "what he could say that wouldn't be crossing the line," defense attorney Michael Orozco said.

"His job was basically to publish information which would cause other parties to act in a manner which would lead to their arrest," Orozco said.

Prosecutors have acknowledged that Turner was an informant who spied on radical right-wing organizations, but the defense has said Turner was not working for the FBI when he allegedly made threats against Connecticut legislators and wrote that three federal judges in Illinois deserved to die.

"But if you compare anything that he did say when he was operating, there was no difference. No difference whatsoever," Orozco said.

Special Agent Ross Rice, a spokesman for the FBI in Chicago, said he would not comment on or even confirm Turner's relationship with the FBI.

Orozco spoke to reporters after a court hearing in Hartford on Tuesday. Turner, 47, of North Bergen, N.J., did not appear, because he is in federal custody in Illinois. His arraignment on the Connecticut charges was rescheduled to Oct. 19.

In June, Turner urged his readers to "take up arms" against Connecticut lawmakers and suggested government officials should "obey the Constitution or die," because he was angry over legislation — later withdrawn — that would have given lay members of Roman Catholic churches more control over their parish's finances.

He wrote in Internet postings the same month that the Illinois federal appeals judges "deserve to be killed" because they issued a ruling that upheld ordinances in Chicago and suburban Oak Park banning handguns. He included their photos and the room numbers of their chambers at the courthouse.
