SAYVILLE: Armed robbery at bank

A man robbed the Island Federal Credit Union branch in Sayville yesterday and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, Suffolk police said.

Sayville has been a secret trouble hot-spot for years.

They have always covered up the huge drug and alcohol problems in the secondary schools for fear of lowering property values. Not one media outlet reported a word about the football star who ran a meth lab in his basement. And school dances had to be curtailed after ambulances had to be called in from other communities to handle the overwhelming number of drunken kids at a middle school shindig.

The parks are filled with homeless panhandlers. They ride bicycles out into traffic and sit shirtless on the curb of the shopping center.

Downtown sidewalks and parking lots are full of snotty skateboarders. Try walking near Rite Aid and the bank without getting run over by some little punk.

Main Street storefronts are emptying out at an alarming rate and the remaining shops sell nothing but extremely expensive tchotchkes. Good luck finding a pair of socks for under $10.

There are a high number of sex offenders in town. Theere is even one behind the counter in the pizzeria.

The churches are full of scandal. The born again place's organist was sleeping with the doctor who murdered his wife and the Catholic Church has been home to at least three pedophiles. And let's not forget the mother who used some weird religious voodoo ritual to murder her cheerleader daughter because the kid was possessed by the devil.

Sayville is a dumping ground for individuals in court supervision. The closing of the psych hospitals filled Sayville with mental patients. Now there are a large number of sober houses and halfway houses whose residents wander the streets.

Scratch the surface, quaint little Sayville isn't as pretty as they'd like you to think.

Slow down. Sayville is not a slum yet. It's still a fairly nice town. I've spent time in Virginia and N. Carolina in past couple years. The problems are much the same everywhere. Mayberry is a fictional place.
