Most of the "anti-tax" people I know don't hesitate to buy a case of beer and a carton or two of ciggies per week (despite the high taxes on each) or think nothing of driving a gas guzzling Mercedes or Tahoe and spending over a hundred dollars for dinner at some over-priced restaurant. It's basically a "what's in it for me" attitude without any concern for other people or students. Policemen, firemen, and teachers are the backbone of our society and without them you anti-tax people would be the first ones to cry about them not being there when you need them. It's EASY to attack them because they are public employees (putting up with WAY too much grief) paid with public tax dollars. Best suggestion...if you don't like it, MOVE!!! Go down south where tax are much lower and crime and ignorance is much higher. They would welcome you with open arms...and jway proves my point!
You have to be an over paid teacher or fireman that is bankrupting the country while only working 6 months a yr receiving lucrative salaries and pensions.Retiring at age 50-55 & 90% of your wages plus med ins. Then you have the audacity to criticize some one who question your shame full greed. Cops are the ones that deserve good salaries. PS stay out of this area as it has some of the old Vermont ways like when I grew up in VT. Don't wont ya spoiling it.

The drug problem is fueling the crime with B & E so don't harass the police for doing the drug bust in Bellows Falls.

Next ask why little Nicky only served 4 months in jail for a major gun heist that was a federal violation. He is out walking the streets again.

If he did "HARD TIME" with the teeny boppers gang he runs we would all be better off.

Nate and Nicky we are watching you.

Tim, I think you meant to say Vermont State Police don't have 24 hour. Some towns do.

jway, actually I'm a self-employed farmer with a great deal of respect for firefighters and teachers who have to put up with people like you. Ever wonder why national test scores for students are highest in the northeast and lowest in the south? Some of the best teachers are here because they can make a decent wage, unlike in the south where they don't have unions. As for your hatred for teachers (none of whom work only 6 months and usually put in 50-60 hr. work weeks), firefighters (who put their lives on the line every time they go out), and unions (which gave the working man and women a decent wage with decent working conditions)...I can only think that such an attitude is based on jealousy. Just what do you have against middle class working people anyway? I wonder if you'll be bad mouthing unions if your house was burning down or if you had to home school your kids. By the way, Vermont is a very nice place to live and while you don't want to see 'Bama spoiled, don't worry...there isn't all that much to spoil.

State Police cover most of the population of Vermont, and more than three quarters of the land area. It is with that in mind that I say "Vermont" does not have 24 hour police coverage. Some towns do, some have 1 officer working overnight (which might as well be none). Crime gets around by car, and doesn't operate within the confines of towns. My point is that it's 2010, and Vermont law enforcement is stuck in 1950.
