The Volunteer fire depts are cost effective so why even look at them?

They are cost effective. That wouldn't change. Its just that now, all Rockingham residence pay taxes that go to the RVFD include Saxons River and BF residents. Also, the donation that the town gives to the SRFD (its a private non-profit organization, not a town department) may actually come from taxes collected from everyone. I am not sure of that second bit.

Under a new charter, Rockingham would just set up fire service areas so that residents in each area would pay for their individual stations only. Obviously BF residents would pay the most for their department, but at least they would not also be paying for the other two. Since residents in the other two areas pay nothing for the BF station that seems more equitable. None of the current plans under discussion includes merging fire departments. There is just something about Vermont towns and their fire departments...you don't mess with their autonomy.

I say disband the Bellows Falls Police Dept. and contract with the Sheriff's Dept I am sure that would be much more cost effective.I know I will never see a BF Police cruiser out here in Rockingham were I live.Once again the village wants us to pay for their services.

Yup...The tax payers in Rockingham are going to pay for the villages cadillac service, The trustees keep saying people in Rockingham use their downtown and they should pay for it...It's odd that the only ones you ever see out in Bellows Falls are the young gangs of kids roaming the streets, Thanks but no thanks, I will keep the State Police & Rockingham Fire Department, you guys can have your low income housing and 0 tax base and keep buying things you can't afford.

Thank you Kevin Very well said.BF police can't even manage teenagers. I go to the square for nothing anymore either the stores are not open or the service I need is not available.I do all my shopping out of town or across the river.

Contracting the Sheriff Department to police BF would be a giant slap in the face to ALL of us. When Chief Clark left town, he said it was at least in part because he couldn't successfully service the town with the budget offered him. Then, as Sheriff, allllll the way over in Newfane, where he would pocket 10%(or is it 20%?) of any contract given to the Sherriff Department, he said he could properly police BF with a SUBSTANTIALLY SMALLER budget than he had when he was stationed in town. Chief Clark left the town department a mess, and he backed another loser as his replacement.

Although, since Chief Clark is going to Afghanistan, perhaps he could police BF from there for 50 cents and a cheeseburger?

So, according to your logic those that live in the rural areeas of Springfield shouldn't have to pay for SPD. Those that live in the outskirts of Bratt shouldn't pay of the the BPD, those that live outside of the downtown of Claremont should be free from paying anything towards Claremont PD etc.

Fine, you don't pay anything towards village services, and the village will stop paying anything towards town services. Fair enough? We'll also send you a bill every time the FD or PD needs to respond to the TOWN hall or the ROCKINGHAM rec center, or any of the schools. Maybe we'll even discount you some for the town hall since our government uses it a bit too. Try making that work.

You claim that the village has "0 tax base". You couldn't be more wrong. We villagers have the vast majority of the towns tax base. That's not even counting the dam. Try getting by on 20% of the tax income you have now if the village secedes. I am not thrilled with the idea of paying towards the O'Brian Road project or the Brockways Mills project etc, but I understand that's what I do as a citizen of Rockingham. I just wish the rural folks would also have some sense of civic duty.

Go ahead and bill me but do not forget that two of the schools you will bill me for are in the village and they aren't the best of the three schools now in existence./ So take them too, and townsfolk can run the one school in SR( which by the way has the best test scores) and we will run that, have school choice for middle school and you can pay the bill for the two in the village along with the special ed costs for them. You are actually starting to catch on Vermont Citizen. Soon you will be fully "there"!!

School budgets and taxes are a completely separate part of ones property taxes. They wouldn't be affected. They remain in the Rockingham School District.

I am all for school choice, however. I do not yet have children of school age, but I am absolutely positive I will move before ever sending them to any school in BF. I agree with your assessment.

As far as the Highway Department goes If you remember "Vermont Citizen" they were separate at one time Village/Rockingham and they merged I was against it back then as were many other people because we knew it was the beginning of a bigger merger. As far as the road projects you keep talking about that are going to be done in Rockingham they are financed by Town, State, and sometimes Federal monies.Highway budgets are usually the lowest budgets in any town. And you make me laugh "Your Village" is good enough to live in but not good enough to send your children to its schools. The village needs to get their spending under control and clean up their own messes.

I agree with the idea of keeping the school budget separate from the Highway Department.

Correct, they are not good enough though they certainly are expensive enough. There are many that agree.
