The contract also has a 90 day opt out option for both parties and might I suggest 1 use it if unhappy.
The "JACKED UP RATES" quote from Walsh should have stated that this figure accurately reflects the actual cost of running such a facility.
Newport NH runs their Water & Sewer with just 2 men and they serve a much larger area than Bellows Falls.
But don't worry Saxtons River we will be getting new leaders that will make Merger happen and Bellows Falls special tax district will still suffer the burden.
I don't blame any outlying district against merger until the cost of doing business is reduced in Bellows Falls.
Look at the 2 departments that suck the life blood out of Bellows Falls start there and get those budgets inline with all the other communities.
Accountability not paper pushers are needed.

Is it unreasonable to expect that before the Trustees vote, they are sure that what they are voting on is proper. I mean in this case, a contract already has language prohibiting a rate increase and they vote one anyway?? Assuming the reporter is accurate, which I don't, this stroy reports that they voted an increase which a contract they are a party to does not permit.
Is it any wonder why some folks would not want a merger given this level of either arrogance or incompetence.

What a Joke BF is one big sewer. Saxtons River is a nice Village do yourself a favor and break away from BF. In Rockingham we have our own sewers and and water just the way I like it. Wish we (Rockingham would break away as well) and don't tell me about all the taxes the power co. gives us it won't last forever. BF has nothing to offer. We went to Athens for Pizza the other night and there were punk kids everywhere on the sidewalks making rude comments, swearing, smoking where was the million dollar PD?

how do you figue that newports plant does more ? its flow is 720,000 gallons per day and there a totally different type of plant, there more like the saxtons river plant, and bellows falls runs bf,saxtons river and takes walpoles also and has 4 pump stations they maintain and operate and i believe that newport has more then 2,they have 2 main operators and then utility operators and there are 6 men
Bob Naylor: Superintendent
Mike Denno: Utilities Technician
Mike McGill: Utilities Technician
John Shull: Utilities Technician
Arnold L. Greenleaf, Plant Superintendent/ Chief Operator
Richard Boone, Assistant Plant Operator
so those facts are way off ,bf and saxtons river both are getting a fair deal at the present cost, saxtons river is a simple plant to run and saxtons river pays all repairs and maintnence and utilitys, all they pay bf for is for the wages of 2 men to go and run it on the average of 2 hours a day, and if it wasnt for osha laws it could be done with 1 man per day but most of the wastewater operations when you have to go into a confined space you need 2 people.
i think bf is making a big mistake and dividing the people even more then before by doing so just as the healthcare reform is doing to this country, we all need to start working together all this fighting is doing is costing you all more money.

Lets get some people on the board this time that have the" Brains and the Sense " to look at the" big picture " and not go in there with their own agendas . We need to all work together to get anything done !!!!

Look at the comments from the 7th generation Vermonter. That sort of attitude against BF prevails amongst those outside of the village...except when they need BF services.

That attitude is pretty prevelent towards Bellows Falls no matter the reason and no matter the time. No one "needs" BF for anything. A convenience, sure. A "want", probably.. But "need" ? I don't think so.
If BF is going to break contracts, then why continue business with them?
No one likes going there. No one likes being there. No one trusts the people that run the place. And certainly no one needs anything from there. This whole thing is a farce.

We use no services BF provides!BF uses Rockingham tax money to pay for their paved streets, sidewalks, library, streetlights, recreation area,
swimming pool and firetrucks. Give it a break, we pay for too much already!

Spuds get off your high horse , people in the village pay town taxes also. Why should we pay to have Brockways Mill road paved? It is not in the Village.

I will agree that our services are out of line. Every time a board tries to cut them they are called names, sit there and go along and they love them.

John C I don't think they were breaking the contract just bringing it in line with the expenses.I watched the meeting last night and Les White stated there was over a 40% increase for medical insurance.

Why is the board at fault for watching over this. I know just go along and make our neighbors happy.I find it interesting Louise couldn't get anyone else to look at running the plant.Maybe they just are getting a sweetheart deal.

Dennis I thank you for your input also. Didn't you used to work at the BF sewer? Why don't you bid $42,000.00 and run it if it is such a great deal.

I personally think this board has tried their best. I haven't seen any personal agendas, they have watched the budget pretty closely.

This is what they are elected to do.

Yes you do use our services Spuds. Remember the flood at Town Hall .... it was Bellows Falls Fire that went there and took care of the problem.

Spuds I see both sides ,I don't blame you for being upset . We both pay Town taxes lets try and get along.

You are correct in saying we have side walks, the one in front of my house is so bad you can't walk on it.

Bellows Falls spends way to much for its services and we should have a tea party of our own.

that thought has crossed my mind, 42000.00 for 2 hours a day a year is a good deal to me

Bring in Bergmann to negotiate a new deal with SR. If they do not cooperate she can shout them into submission, then they will see how good they had it. Bully, bully, just like Teddy Roosevelt.

Dennis don't forget Sat and Sun. Remember you wouldn't be union so you won't get 3 hours overtime, for weekends.

You would make a fortune , give them a estimate .Sr would be so happy.

sr?? would be about 57.59 an hour at 42000 a year, wish i could do it i would in a second, but am sure theres others who will bid on it, i have talked to 2 that are interested, so i guess we will see what will happen, just think that bf is making a mistake and i am not taking either side i have no ties to either one, just worked there and know what it takes to run that plant and it isn't much, i miss running saxtons river plant ,it was a great job and interesting and fairly simple and cheap plant to run compared to alot of the plants out there, the only thing i can see that could be different with the contract would be to charge for above and beyond work at the saxtons river plant, like when a motor or bearing in the rotor needs replacing, saxtons river pays for all parts, utilitys ect already and just pays bf for man hours so if something breaks maybe saxtons river should pick up the extra man hours to fix whatevers broken or farm it out to a contractor, either way if folks were reasonable it shoukd be able to work it out so its good for both partys, but it looks like bf is desperate and will do anything to try and dig themselfs out of a hole they dug themselfs and 70,000 to run that plant is a bit crazy if you ask me, 50,000 a year maybe would be a little on the fair side or do as i said and the 42000 a year be just for routine work and testing ,daily dutys ect and not include repairs.
anyways best of luck to both and hope it all can be worked out.

New Hampshire and Maine stand out among the New England states with tax burdens in the bottom half of the spectrum, while Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont residents have tax burdens among the top 10 in the country and Rhode Island ranks 12th.

None of the three parties in that discussion have backed themself into a fiscal corner like the Trustees in BF have done. Hence no attempt at "highway robbery". Remember a few years ago, O'Connor did a study comparing staffing levels in Town Hall to other towns? Until the Trustees get the fiscal house in order this stuff will go on. And lacking that fortitude to trim because so and so is a buddy of my high school sweethearts cousin by a second marriage etc. it will be as it is.
