well i have'nt and if they have'nt decked they don't have a right to be in the wheelhouse because if they are doing it they have wore out a lot of knee pads to get there, and knowing how and about the deck ispart of it,i would'nt want to running up and down the river not knowing if the tow will stay togather, they are asking for trouble.

Lots of women training now. No female big to pilots that I know of. Have to have big balls to play that game.

The only way that can happen if they got their license back in the 70s. Since then you got to deck for 3 years before you go to school . Now you got to be a steersman bitch before you get be turn loose

Southern don't really pay good but it easier work plus if you want to move up they got their own schools like emd classes or tankerman classes

Now take app 5yrs to make a stand your own watch pilot. There are different levels of liscense you have to obtain after being evaluated by what the Coast Guard calls a "designated examiner",which is a highly skilled wheelman himself!! This is after what is time accumulated to 18 months on the deck,so yes,you have to earn it!!!!

About 182k in 2011.

Who an where does a pilot make $182,000 a year? Aver. Pay is over 100,000, but no captian noes forsure what he's going to make from year to year from riding over an ect.. Start bout $32000,lead bout 38,000, mate about 45,000, fleet mate about $51,000, pilot bout 120,000, capt bout $150000.... An it all veries.... It's a good career now, it's tripled over last 10 years, an will keep going up!!!! Good for me, I did work my azz off an paid my dues on deck!!! I think pilots should make as much as airline pilots, without the cargo they push, the USA would not go around!! An when u figure 15 barge tow is worth around $15,000,000... Plus the lives of the 7-9 person crew... An sum have chemical tows, that would evacuate a whole town, if a accident , there job is one stressfull spot!!!!!
