If they would clean up the drugs in Savannah and everywhere else in the US, we would all probably be better off.

I am interested in knowing where you live sunbeam18. Do you live somewhere safer than Savannah? If so where?

I absolutely live somewhere safer than Savannah. And if I knew who you are I would tell you where I live, But I dont know, so sorry. You could be some kind of criminal yourself as far as I know.

Lived in Savannah in the early '90's..doesn't seem to have changed much. We have the same violence in Columbia, SC..CWP helps even the odds.

Haha, I am not a criminal sunbeam18. I was asking because the "crime" factor is subjective to where you currently live. I live in a town that has a pretty low crime rate according to the national average but live close to areas that have a high crime rate and it has never affected me. So I am just trying to get an accurate gage on crime in Savannah and surrounding areas.

Yoz, "CWP"? Is that a Concealed Weapon Permit? If so do you really feel the need to carry a weapon in Savannah and Columbia? Are you being attacked daily, monthly, yearly?

Hermitage, I really wasnt trying to insinuate that you are a criminal. Its just that I dont know who you are and people have to be very careful these days. The wrong person could be reading this and the next thing I know, they could be showing up on my door step. I was just saying that you could be for all I know. No disrespect intended. I live in a town that has a pretty low crime rate also, compared to the bigger cities. I lived in Richmond Hill about 10 years ago and went to Savannah on a pretty regular basis. I havent had anything bad happen to me there, but I know a few people that have. As a matter of fact, I had a friend that got shot down in cold blood in July. In the past few months the crime rate has went up so much in Sav that its awful. Most of it, Im almost sure is drug related, but that is beside the point. Its not somewhere I would want my family. Or anybody else in my life if I could help it. I mean really..... Its awful when you cant even walk down the street without worrying whether somebody is gonna jump out and mug you or worse, shoot you down in the street. All because you have something they want. I dont know about everybody else, but I was raised to believe that if someone had something you wanted to ask for it. The worst that would happen is that they would tell you no. Its sad that that is no longer the case. I know crime is rampant everywhere anymore but it seems to me that is worse in Savannah than it has to be. Im not sure what can be done about it. I wish somebody would try to do something. Im just glad that I dont have to live there. Its just like I said in my earlier post. If anyone is contemplating moving there, they should certainly check out wtoc.com . It tells alot about that city and personally I do not believe that it is a safe place and Im sure that Im not the only one. Sorry if I offended anyone.

For "Sunbeam 18" No offense taken and I understand and appreciate your point of view. I live within close distance of NYC, Atlantic City, Philadelphia and Camden, NJ(#1 most dangerous city in the USA) so my opinion of crime may be different than others. I do frequent these areas for business and pleasure(except for camden..haha) and feel no affect of crime. So my question is even if there is crime in Savannah will I feel the affect while dining there and living in the outer suburbs of Savannah. I am looking for a safe quiet neighborhood but want some city life and also want to be close to beaches.

Hermitage, I guess its all according to where you dine at. I would say that the downtown area is the more dangerous place. Drugs are running rampant in all the big cities. They have even made it to the smaller towns that I am used to. So you can just imagine that where ever you can find the drugs is where you with find the most crime. Im sure that there are somewhat safe places to live on the outskirts of Savannah, but I certainly wouldnt suggest anywhere near downtown. Its just so dangerous. The town of Richmond Hill is not far away and it seems to be a pretty safe place and the beach and Savannah are within an hours drive. Then again, Richmond Hill just had their first murder in like 25 years. Im really starting to believe that you wont get away from those kinds of things anymore, no matter where you go. Just research carefully. And good luck to you. I hope you find the place youre looking for. And I wish you safety if Savannah is your choice.

From what I can see, nobody who is living in Savannah is commenting, so I'll tell you how it really is. Having moved here from NYC, I can certainly tell you that NYC feels safer simply because there are people around you wherever you go. Savannah is microscopic in comparison, so you can walk down the street and not see anybody, which gives you a feeling of unease. There are indeed places you shouldn't go and you have to use your smarts, but if you live in the historic district, you're as safe as anywhere. And if you live on the islands, you're as safe as you are in any suburb in America. I still hear people say they don't lock their doors. I wouldn't go that far, but nevertheless...It's storybook pretty and it's awfully friendly. The issue is more the job situation - jobs are scarce in this neck of the woods, so don't come here depending on finding a job - have one lined up.

Savannah is safe to live in. I dont understand why everybody says it isnt unless they moved here from Mayberry. It's no worse than any other big city, stay away from and don't move to certain areas and you'll be fine. All the murders (except for one) referred to earlier have all been in the same area of town where known drug dealers and criminals live.

I have lived in Savannah for 5 years, I have had somebody attempt to break into the front door of my house, had my car broken into, have had several things taken from my yard (bicycle etc.). All of which I put up with. Tightened up security etc. However I was leaving work on the fourth of July around midnight, and was jumped by 6 people and put into the hospital. I was NOT robbed, just jumped. They didn't take my cell or wallet... go figure. The police never filed a report since I couldn't ID any of them. My description was a black guy in a red shirt. They often don't report crimes like this because it hurts tourism. So... I am moving out. Not to mention that while working construction I cant tell you how many doors I replaced in "nicer" neighborhoods from people being robbed. Savannah is a HORRIBLE place to live. Look at the public school system here. Everybody who can afford it puts their kids into private school since the schools here are so rough! The population massively under-educated and the majority of people are willing to work for illegal immigrant wages. It is a great place to visit. IF you don't go out at night... and don't stay more than a week.

ummmm, just avoid the darker areas of town ( i know, hard to do), and you should be fine. Keeping a Smith at hand doesn't hurt either.

I have lived here for 12 yrs. Because the school system sucks, you will have to move to Wilmington Island area to put your child in a decent public school. There are plenty of private schools if you do not want to live in the Wilmington Island area. If you rent a house on Wilmington, plan to spend atleast $1300.00 a month for a decent place in a good school district. Crime downtown is terrible. I work at the hospitals here and nursing pay is not that great. Pay for blue collar jobs for men is terrible. Don't expect to make more than $15/hr. as a male...if you are lucky enough to get a job. Downtown is beautiful and is only 10 miles from Tybee beach so that is the nice part of living here. There is still a lot of racism here and a very large black population that have a huge attitude towards the white population.

It varies by neighborhood, the best thing to do is look around the specific neighborhood you want to move to. If you can't come here directly, www.savannahneighborhoodguide.com has video tours, and links to crime data statistics, demographic info, school info and all the stuff that you need to know before you pack up.

I would recommend a suburb of Savannah such as Richmond Hill or Rincon. Both places are very safe and approximately 80% white. Do not live in Savannah unless you can afford to live in a more upscale neighborhood. The racial tensions in Savannah are very bad and the blacks are extremely rude. Below is a video link of taken at a Savannah High School football game, it should demonstrate the black mentality that you would have to deal if you chose to live in Savannah.

from sav-tell this southron guy must be a woodsman who only comes out to get the klan paper from liberty county he sounds like he has never been to savannah for him to say that the blacks are rude is plain crazy their are rude people in all races as well as good people in all races you need to comment on WHAT YOU KNOW,WHICH IS NOTHING IF YOU KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT WE ALL WOULD NOT KNOW HOW CRAZY YOU SOUND

Someone is being very informative and helpful, especially if you want them to explain something that you don't understand, so listen carefully to what they tell you. This is also a great day for making some travel plans, perhaps by arranging to visit a friend you haven't seen in a while or by discussing where you should take your next holiday.
