Personally, I think all income, whether from the sweat of the brow, or capital gains, should be taxed equally. I don't subscribe to this nonsensical idea that the rich should get tax breaks on investments because only the rich create jobs. If there weren't garbage truck drivers and carpenters and millions of other common Americans out there spending their paychecks on groceries, gas, etc. there would be no jobs. So while the "working class" might no create jobs, they certainly do create the demand for jobs to be created.

I think it's really time to rework the tax code and make it fairer for all citizens. Take away the loopholes and tax breaks. If we all pay our fair share of taxes our country will be much better off.

You have some fair points, your first paragraph is clueless, but that's OK.

Some states already tax wealth (property taxes, ad valorem, etc.), not to mention "death taxes".

Is it accrue or earn? BTW, do you know the rationale as to why capital gains are (currently) taxed at a lower rate for ALL of us?

Likely the best comment you have made in here. However, can you define fair? Should everybody pay something? Should all pay the same rate (a flat tax)? On income? On spending (the FairTax)? On wealth? If on wealth, how do you do it, the process would be nightmarish, probably more so than what we go through preparing tax returns...

Some of your points are valid, some are not when looking at the bigger picture. Taxing capital gains at the same rate as income will bring more money into the public coffers, but that is going to hurt the middle class far more than it will hurt the uber rich. Granted with the current housing market, this example is not as good as usual, however, typically the biggest capital gain your average American earned was if they sold their house after living in it for a decade or more. You sell your house and with the increased value that it was sold at, you can purchase a bigger and better house. But if the difference between what you paid and what you sold your house for is taxed at the same rate as income, it is going to be much less likely to enable you to upgrade to a nicer house. Or if senior citizens want to sell their family home and downsize, the "profit" they would have made to put towards their retirement has just been slashed dramatically. This is the problem with "quick fixes" and soundbites that sound good on paper until you start looking at the real impact they have on average citizens.

But can you imagine the impact of a flat tax of 12% on everyone with no deductions except to perhaps exempt the bottom tier of wage earners. You could virtually eliminate the IRS - that same IRS that asked for over 1,200 new employees for 2012 at a cost to taxpayers of an additional $473 millions. And that same IRS that has increased audits on small businesses from 32% to 94% depending on the size of the business - and that is a whole lot of money spent by those businesses that could be spent on expansion and employees.

Are there racists in the Republican party - absolutely, but I am very comfortable in saying that there is no greater a percentage of racists in the Republican party than there is in the Democrat party. The Republican party welcomes all who agree with our principles regardless of skin color, but look at what the Democrat party does to any minority who DARES to step outside the party line.
