SAVANNA, IL - The Local Redevelopment Authority will vote to grant a lease-purchase agreement to Depot Training Center to bring growth to the area with the establishment of a homeland security-style training facility to the Savanna Army Depot during the August board meeting.
The owners and management of Depot Security Services, the parent company of the Depot Training Center, have completed all the necessary steps set forth by the LRA Board to confirm a lease-purchase on property in the Depot during the next board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, August 2 at 4:30 pm in Building 247 of the Depot.
Depot Security Services Operations Manager, Charles Latimer expects to receive approval for the land transaction if the security and background checks required by the LRA Board have been completed.
Mike Grace, Depot Security Services Vice President, initially proposed the idea of the training center in August 2005 submitting the required documentation to the LRA Board. The board took no immediate action on the proposal, delaying the projected start date until the existing leaseholder was evicted from the property in February 2006.
After the property was vacant, Grace then again approached the LRA board with
a business plan and proposal to create a modern security and police training facility in that portion of the depot. The proposal was taken to the LRA Economic Development committee in March where it was voted that the property could be leased to Depot Security Services after completion of the due diligence process conducted on Grace and his partner.
The training center has requested to purchase the firing range, a single building (249) and Parcel 2, a plot of empty land on the property to use for multiple training exercises and education. With use of the property, Depot Training Center will host a wide variety of law enforcement, security and military-style training courses for major private corporations, governmental departments and public service agencies as well as qualified private citizens, school groups, civic organizations and more.
“We are very anxious to receive final approval on the land at the Savanna Depot because of the immense impact it will have on the small businesses in the extended Savanna area. The groups and students who come to the training center will sleep, eat and be entertained within the Savanna area. That means significant revenue for the hospitality and tourism-based industry that is desperately needed,” said Grace, who is also a resident of Thomson.
Depot Training Center will bring as many as 200 different trainees each week, all of whom will need to be housed and fed outside of the training center. With the LRA board’s approval of the land transaction, training could begin as early as this fall. The company is excited about the existing property and the ability to establish a turn-key business on the Depot grounds.
The groups owners, management staff, it’s cadre of Instructors and Security Officers are highly qualified in the fields of law enforcement, military operations, and physical security operations and have international experience. Many Depot Training Center personnel most recently were contracted by the US Government to manage and oversee the security operations for FEMA in Mississippi and Louisiana during the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy. Other security professionals within the group regularly provide professional services to major corporations, government agencies and personnel, celebrities, VIP’s of all sorts and private citizens around the world.
