As schools tighten their belts, principals' powers erode

There are 53 comments on the TwinCities.com story from May 19, 2011, titled As schools tighten their belts, principals' powers erode. In it, TwinCities.com reports that:

How many classrooms to fill with third-graders? What technology to buy? How many art teachers, nurses and counselors to hire? Principals in districts across the metro area won't get to make some of those calls for the coming school year.

Many principals have wasted the district money by buying unnecessary goods and services. It is prudent for the district to make the big purchases and not principals. Greater scrutiny is required because of the budget cuts. http://www.digitalundivide.com

SO - why do suppose those kids are learning about Loozy-anna? of course! because of KATRINA, the hurricane ordered by Bush and Cheney to destroy New Orleans, because New Orleans had a lot of black residents who were always voting democrat, so Bush and Karl Rove steered the hurricane down there to kill them all. Understand now? That's why Loozy-anna is an important subject to public school teachers. You think i'm exaggerating?

Hysterical.

After thousands of dollars, numerous experiments, layers of bureaucracy, and abdication of any discipline authority, grads still cannot read, reason, write, make change w/o a computerized cash register, or date the Civil War.

They DO know, though, that capitalism is evil, all "cultures" are equal, all events are morally equivalent, and plants should have attorneys.

Totally backwards. Give Principals the expectation that their schools will perform AND then give THEM the resources and authority to do it. Get rid of the 15 layers of administration at the district level. I have o doubt schools would improve.

Surprised principals have any authority at all. Just hand your kids over to the Unions, and they will educate your child to be good little Liberal Nazis.

Liberal and Nazi dont go together----Liberal and communist go together....and GOP and nazi go together.....left and right ideals. Both are evil and destroying America........Lets all vote Libertarian or Constitution party now and forever...Lets get back to real conservative values.

What makes you people think that having district people centralizing decisions is a better solution. In Burnsville, our HR director is busy promoting her shego book and making a video in a cowboy hat drinking shots of alcohol.it appears this self serving district administrator will have more power in making those decisions as long as our commpetent school board agrees to renew her one year contract in June. She is making 140k per year.her video clip is from WWW.taniazavertachance.com . she's not the only problem at the district ofce. Many high paid district. Heads are paid too much money and this is all passed by. our board of education. This is why community people should know who they're voting for next term.I see the problem in high paid district administrators and self serving ineffective board members that are puppets for the superintendent, who is also paid way too high

As with virtually every government entity, the problem is not with the front line personnel.

The problem lies with the consultants, the multiple layers of administration personnel, the so-called specialists, the supervisory personnel that supervise one to three people but are really only there to justify their existence. 30% of personnel employed by school districts could be cut and not one student would notice a difference.

Get rid of Education Minnesota and then you will be able to convince the voters that it really is “for the children”.

i would think the pro business baggers would be on the principals side on this. He is in charge of finances for his "business" and to have outside sources telling him what to do seems to go against trusting the experts to do what is best.

Dirty little Education Minnesota secret not mentioned in this so called report:

Minnesota schoolteachers are still getting increases in their compensation packages that vastly exceed what private industry workers are seeing. So of course, other parts of school budgets must be pared down to make room for fat paychecks for school teachers.

Of course these fat school teacher paychecks don't actually help kids learn, but Education Minnesota and their friends doing the "reporting" at the PP insist upon keeping that on the down low.

"Minnesota Association of School Administrators"- The fact that an organization like this exists in our public school system tells you all you need to know about why they are failing. Spend the money in the classroom.

The decisions and power needs to be pushed out to the schools and the teachers.

Central power is innefective and inneficient. Look how bad a shape we are in with our huge central government. Push the power out to the more local jurisdictions.

Maybe they can cut the pay for administrators and principals while they are at it. Interesting that men are still predominantly the prinicipals, even in elementary schools.
