It would be the RIGHT thing to do ... the tax payers have paid for their asses all these years... now they should 'pay us back' by serving in the armed forces (I hear they are short of men these days..).. and at the same time they will learn the concepts of 'discipline' and 'behaving like normal human beings'...

two or three birds with one stone right there....

Marin City is the victim of the "War on Poverty" which is about as successful as the "War on Drugs".

I think it has something to do with a modern version of Manifest Destiny.

Public Housing IS the problem.

Seriously, great idea if the world worked as idealistically as people would like it to. The people living there will never want to give up their free ride unless a better free ride comes along. What's the high school dropout rate amongst Marin City residents? How about college admissions? These people live in the heart of one of the wealthiest counties in the nation. And the only thing holding them back is their criminal and anti-social mindset and behavior. Put on some clothes that fit, speak ENGLISH the way it is taught in every school in America and maybe you can get a better job than Best Buy.

If he can take even a few kids off the streets and get them thinking about making lives for themselves then I am all for it. It is hard to feel this will have any affect, but here is to hoping.

Whatever those wanna be gangs in Marin City are called, they can only be disbanded by their own community, who is up for the challenge?

It's interesting that when efforts are made to work within a community which faces unique issues, there are those who resent any change to a situation they say is damaged. What is being said here is that the seperation and predjudice which created this anomoly 65 years ago is only the fault of the residents. Opening new avenues and viewpoints to a population that is forced to watch the world around them prosper, is an oppotunity to picture themselves growing beyond the limitations that have been their legacy. The original community built the ships that protected this country in WWII, but after their jobs were over, they were left in limbo.
Suddenly this area became highly desirable and isolation was the remedy concocted to ignore the issue. Open more windows and doors, but don't throw stones until you understand how history points out the bad ideas which the kind of thinking you espouse have fostered.

"concerned free thinker" I don't know what the hell your trying to say but it sounds like typical liberal mumbo jumbo. I know alot about Marin City and what goes on in that community. Trust me, if you spent even a little time there you would know that the most of the members of that community have no interest at all in turning things around.
Listen, the black community has a lot of problems that they do not want to deal with. They embrace, in fact, they profit off of white americas "guilt" over the past. The "hip hop" gangster rap, the clothes, the reputation. That is why the violence in Marin City has increased. The Young Hawgs are trying to gain a reputation for their community so it will be recognized as "hard" like Oakland, SF, Vallejo and Richmond. In order to do that, you have to make outsiders scared to come into Marin City. But when Marin City locals commit crimes, nobody in Marin City is willing to come forward to be a witness. But if someone comes from outside the community and committs a crime, the community will come forward. Trust me, I know! Marin City will only change when all of it's members decide enough is enough. These programs, while positive, can't replace strong parental guidance and proper family values!

Bulldoze the housing projects. That is the solution to the problem. Skinny little Guatemalans cross two frontiers illegally, a burning hot desert and line up along the sidewalk to look for jobs, any jobs...meanwhile all these "tough and athletic" youth in MC sit around whining about how there are no jobs or opportunities for them. Future pimps, criminals and parasites is all they are. Screw them and their enablers on the Board of Stupes.

Don't forget the family planning education - it is the only way to be sure the next generation will do better.

Nothing will change these black kids. Their parents don't care, and they don't care. Get rid of marin city, and get rid of the canal in SR. Clean up Marin by getting the filth out. Quit giving tax payers money to lazy uneduacted people who only want to live off the government.

Slavery was the worst thing that could have ever happened to the western hemisphere. If only the slavers had of known what they were doing to us, the future generations of white folks. Now we have to deal with this "problem."

Actually its good to have a place like MC for them to live and kill each other. Keeps em out of my neighborhood anyway.
