Glad to hear that this witch will finally be retiring, too bad though, because she should have been fired.

Here's a perfect opportunity to reduce administrative costs. Why not merge this district with a neighboring school district, and have one supervisor overseeing a larger district? Marin should NOT have 19 schools districts - it's a terrible waste of dollars with no benefit to the classrooms. They could use the savings to pay for classroom aides so the class sizes could be larger and avoid bussing kids away from their neighborhoods.

She earns $185,428 a year... for a single school district?!

Lets see... run for P.O.T.U.S and make 400,000 for all the headaches caused by blood sucking journalists and ahole politicos; or become NUSD super for almost half of that?

Hell, IF Ahhh-nold were to accept a salary check, all he gets is $206K.

Ouch education money well spent.

Even if overpaid, I happily argue that Mrs. La Torre-Derby workethic has been far superior to Barrack O'vacation Obama's.

Not to belittle any of the Superintenden't accomplishments as I am sure there have been some, but peraps they wouldn't needed to bus 40 students to save a whopping $40,000 or so on their $50,000,000 Budget. 19 School Districts in this little county does seem like a lot.

At what age is she retiring? Anybody know?
65? Good. Under 65, not good.
I know, unpolite to ask a woman's age. But we should know how public retirements with benefits for life compare to the private sector.

I gotta come to Jan's defense. She's done a really good job. As for her salary, is that her fault or the district board's fault? Don't you want to get paid the going rate for whatever you do? Would you ever say during a job offer,'Wait a minute, that's way too much money. I can't accept'? I don't see any correlation between her salary and her performance. Just as John Bernard was widely hated within the district, I think Jan was widely liked.

Jan Derby has worked many, many hours and dealt with many, many crises to earn her salary. Given her long career and the job responsibilities, I don't think the salary is outrageous. Heck, most teachers of 10 years are earning $70k or so, and they don't work year round.

Thank you, Jan, for your many years of hard work and dedication, your overwhelmingly positive energy and attitude, your late hours, for taking the heat in the press when you've had to make tough decisions, and for being gracious and dignified in the face of it all. Even if we haven't always agreed with your decisions, we know they were well-considered. We will miss you.

If someone at the district did their job, they would have been on top of the enrollment situation before this month. Since the superindendent is the person in charge of the district, I hold this woman responsible for the recent enrollment fiasco. Why can't they move the enrollment date back a few months and get a better idea of how many students to plan for in the Spring?? It seems really STUPID to wait until the first week of school to figure out there are more kids than classroom space. I'm sorry for the kids that will be shuffled around to new schools, all due to administrative incompetence.

No, it's not Jan's "fault" that her salary is what it is. But, here is what she SHOULD have done: offered, volunteered, suggested or elected to take a pay cut. However small, I think it would have done so much to show the teachers, office staff, librarians and school nurses that she was in the trenches with them; that she felt their pain, too; that she would "suffer" with them. Would it be enough to save a position? Probably not. But it would boost morale. You can't put a price tag on leadership.

How old is this taxpayer subsidized gov't employee? Come on IJ; Novato Advance.
Is this not the age of Obama transparecy and disclosure.
I believe the silence to my redundant question speaks for itself. Somebody knows.
Is gov't disclosure to the taxpayers above approach?

Lacking Leadership...you might want to brush up on your history. Jan has specifically not taken a raise (for years) compared to the many Superintendents in the county, to show her support for teachers and staff. She said that she wouldn't take a raise unless her teachers got a raise. Not many people have that strength or leadership...
