they will raid this fund and loot it to pay pensions and social welfare programs that they refuse to cut

I will vote YES on this because I hate cigarettes more than I hate social welfare programs.

"Californians Against Out-of-Control Taxes and Spending, a group funded by Philip Morris USA, is the measure's main opponent."

Oh, my!! What a surprise! LMAO

"'The information that big tobacco is putting out is not correct,' said Bourguignon, a volunteer with the cancer society.'They're blowing smoke. They're trying to protect their economic and financial interest with no regard to the health consequences.'"

And this is news?

You are right. Ever since Big Government declared war on "the little folks" - primarily hard working overtaxed worker *("middle")* class women and men who do not smoke tobacco, as well as those who do, the incidence of immune system deficient ailments such as childhood Asthma has soared. While this is especially hard on the little tikes. Their bodies never have the opportunity to develop strong immune systems as they had in olden times when they were exposed to beneficial tobacco smoke. The biggest immediate tragedy, though, is the increased costs to the taxpayer of providing medical care to non-smoking adults, especially the sickly elderly so-called "pothead" 60s generation.

We decent women and men who do not suffer from the infantile need to accept silly post-revolution Big Government propaganda - usually tax and increased Government control related - at face value know full well that correlation does not necessarily mean causation. Even so, we cannot overlook the FACT that since Big Government nationalized Big Tobacco, both Big Tobacco profits and tobacco taxes collected by Big Government have never been greater.,

Oh, you mean when they began subsidizing tobacco growers and giving tax breaks to the tobacco companies? Or do you mean when they collaborated with the tobacco companies to maximize the addiction rate in the armed forces by sending cigarettes along with their meals? Or are you going back to the time when religious leaders were, by law, paid with tobacco leaf?

During the early 60s, a scientific committee was formed to advise the Surgeon General regarding the impact of smoking on health. Among their conclusions were these:

"CIGARETTE SMOKING IS A HEALTH HAZARD of sufficient importance in the United States to warrant, appropriate remedial action."

"cigarette smoking is causally related to lung cancer in men"

"The data for women, though less extensive, point in the same direction."

The effect of "AIR POLLUTION WAS FOUND TO BE... FAR OUTWEIGHED BY CIGARETTE SMOKING."

"The death rate from heart disease was 70 percent higher in cigarette smokers than in nonsmokers"
==========

Half of the members of the committee were cigarette smokers, and ALL were approved by the tobacco industry. The conclusions were reached UNANIMOUSLY.

Yes. I obtained a copy of "the report" when it was first published. In fact I believe I still have it in my library. That tax and increased Governmental control political document seems even more nonsensical today than when it was first published during the early days of the revolution. The problem is that so many post-revolution people have been driven to hysterics in large part because of Government tax and control related propaganda. Many of those Government "educated" individuals have an infantile need to "believe" what revolutionary Government tells them, no matter how foolish it may be.

If you took the time to read the article, you would have learned some of the most fervent backers of this proposed tax increase legislation included the cancer society, the American Lung Association and the American Heart Association. These taxpayer subsidized organization, along with others, are chief beneficiaries of transferred nationalized Big Tobacco taxpayer money. I hope that fact may have set the wheels in your brain in motion.

Incidentally, Hugh Jass. Many supporters of the war against decent women and men who do not smoke tobacco - as well as those who do - are food eaters. Revolutionary Government has now escalated the war to include them.
