The J. was dropped from the Richard Reiss in 1989 when ownership changed to Erie Sand Steamship Co. Sid Smith Jr., the company's owner believed it was unlucky to launch the newly acquired vessel with 13 letters in it's name. It cost a significant amount of money to actually change the vessels name as well.

My dad sailed aboard the Richard j reiss as chief steward in the 40's. He,s gone now but every time I see a great lakes vessel, i think of him
