Kurt Stahl left Germany right after WW2 and according to him 'went as far into
CA as the road would allow. to the end of Hwy 17.
He cut all the trees and build the motel himself. The old post card showing the place was signed 1975 he drew the picture.
there are many stories about the place ...

I remember him as a kind hearted stubborn very knowledgeable man who when he had a mission he would get it done. Be it dig a well by hand or a 100 ft trench 5ft deep.

I do hope he's ok.
Been awhile now.

My husband and I spent many pleasant summers at the Black Forest. I believe Kurt's name was Karl. In the 80's he married a younger German woman named Ulrike. Sadly Karl had a stroke in the mid-90's. The Black Forest closed and, as of our last trip to that area, 2007, had not been kept open by Ulrike. The cabins were bought by a music camp (?) but in 2007 they were unused and had fallen into disrepair.

Indeed, there are many stories about Karl/Kurt and the Black Forest. He had a little dog name Schotzie which, he told me, means Gypsy. One Christmas Ulrike's whole family came over from Germany and her mother made traditional German fare for the guests and had a Christmas tree with real candles. At the stroke of midnight we were all given a small glass of sherry.

We stopped there in 1994. We saw bill board sigs for it for miles and it made us so curious to see what this was. By this time Karl had lost interest in the restaurant but was still renting motel rooms ($30). A young couple traveling east from Alberta stopped in a few weeks earlier and decided to take over management of the restaurant and bar for Karl. This place was a stopping off point for reluctant migrant workers. Another group we met there was heading West to the mines. The food was awesome although the wait was about 2 hours. Local Indians stopped in with their daily Walleyed fish catch to sell to the restaurant. We stayed up at the bar way too late. Next morning we took a hike down to the lake and rocks. Then had breakfast.
We drove past in 2005 and saw "for sale" signs and some activity in the driveway, but didn't stop.

I have owned the former Black Forest Motel since 2003. Feel free to contact me. I also know Karl Stahl's ex-wife--very well and dealt with all remaining possessions. [email protected]

The billboards seen for miles away. As Karl would say PUT UP MORE SIGNS...THE PEOPLE WILL COME JUST TO SEE WHY SO MANY SIGNS. Once...or twice after hydro cut the power off I dug and hid power lines to re-feed the dark powerless Black Forest from "the building outback" that still had power.
Sorry to hear of Karl having a stroke. So I have to ask...did he pass away?
