While the rest of the world is in turmoil – while food and gas prices are rising – while property values are going down and property taxes are going up, wages are going down but the cost of living is rising. The average person can't afford to buy health insurance, but our public servants want us to pay for theirs. The latest bit of tomfoolery being perpetrated on the Luce County citizenry has to do with the planned multimillion dollar project casually known as the “Civic Center”, or skating complex. Unknown to most of you, but very well known to most of the committee that runs the operation, contrary to what they are spilling to the public (“we will get grant money to pay for project”), You will be the ones paying for the project through a millage vote which they will trick the people through word playing to vote for. There will be a few people who do prosper through this project such as the builders, planners, and and various members of the Civic Center Committee. The kids will have a skating rink if they can afford the entrance fee, people from all areas can have their group meetings at the new convention center. It will be the new gathering place in the community. There won't be any need to go to Timber Charlies, or Zellars, or Mc Donalds any more. The new swimming pool can replace the ones at Park Place, KOA, and Comfort Inn We can just close the smaller motels in the area because with the new facilities at the Civic Center they won't be needed any more. Maybe the owners and employees of those restaurants and motels can get a good job working for the Civic Center. Of course it will all be paid for by your tax dollars, unless of course they can come up with the millions of dollars needed to complete their entire plan by getting individual 20 thousand dollar grants one at a time. But who can't afford to help the kids, right? I say that more than anything the plan is to use the kids hockey teams to bring people to their “Civic Center”. In “effect” using these children in an effort to make a profit for themselves. The taxpayers will fund the original building process, and the ongoing maintenance, while the childrens hockey brings in additional income. After the the first millage (which we will be tricked into passing for the children's sake) nears the end, and at each succeeding renewal date we will be compelled into passing the new millage because the Civic center will have to continue operating until it sees a profit, or reaches it's full potential. But actually it is only a money pit which will never reach it's potential because that's just the catch phrase used to have us continue funding their business aka:(non – profit) operation. Wouldn’t our tax dollars (if there was any more to go around) be better spent on teaching our children how to read, write, how to learn and think better, than on a skating rink? Do they really need to know how to skate better in order to do better in this world. What is important to you and your children. So far I would give an F for failure on securing a good future for our children – and putting all of our time, effort and money into a new skating arena will not increase our score. Also do we want to spend tax dollars on a project that will inevitably, if carried out to it's completion compete with our existing businesses in the area. I say it's an all around ill thought out “pie in the sky” dream of a few people who want something that's not there. A few people have already joined their bandwagon, and I ask that those people reconsider what they are doing. Surveys can be manipulated, and have been to say what you want them to. Millage votes can be manipulated through word play. Reality is that the citizens cannot afford to fund a third tier project when we need so many other things.

This county is eventually going to go broke just like all of the others. Look around you. Michigan is broke – they're cutting essential services to the needy. What's on your priority list. There is no shortage of outdoor recreation in Luce County - We already have more state land, parks, campgrounds, snowmobiling, four wheeling, fishing, hunting, and you name it than any other county in Michigan. Let's use what we have and not be burdened down with a project that will without a doubt continue to take every spare nickle that we have and more far into the future. Don't get fooled again!
