Sauk Village Chief of Staff Brunetta Hill-Corley termination upheld

There are 70 comments on the www.nwitimes.com story from Jul 3, 2010, titled Sauk Village Chief of Staff Brunetta Hill-Corley termination upheld. In it, www.nwitimes.com reports that:

By Bob Moulesong Times Correspondent

According to the terms of her contract, Hill-Corley had the right to a request a termination hearing to determine if her firing was with due cause. If not, the village would have been liable for the remainder of her contract.

The ruling in the special session held Tuesday was that Hill-Corley was terminated with just cause, meaning that the village has no liability.

The special session started with an open meeting, then went to closed session where the hearing was held. After the board re-convened from the special session, they voted 4-2 to terminate Hill-Corley with cause.

the mayors actions are just out of control. He is acting like this is a third grade playground. He has no self control and he has no idea what it is to be a Mayor. He should be ashamed of himself and just crawl back into the ghetto that he came from.

This is TRULY sad if it is factual. One can't help but think how this looks to the Prairie State College Board Of Trustees which Hill-Corley is a member of.

On the Website http://prairiestate.edu/gen/gen-trusbios.html at the bottom of the page you can find the Trustee Biography of Hill-Corley which reads:

A resident of Olympia Fields, Brunetta Hill-Corley joined the board in 2009 to fill the remaining term of a resigned Board member.

Ms. Hill-Corley has a bachelorís degree in Psychology from Spellman College, a masterís in Public Administration from Roosevelt University, and a M.A. in School Leadership from Concordia University. Ms. Hill-Corley is the chief of staff for Sauk Village and prior to that she was employed by School District 168 as grants and accounts payable clerk. She is a member of the Illinois Association of Business Officials and founder and past president of the Sauk Village Classified Union.

One must take pause and consider that with the education and background Hill-Corley has, how things could have been askewed and allowed to get so out of control on her account. Let's not forget, there is still a pending investigation of Hill-Corley along with former Police Chief Frank Martin by the Attorney General's office for allegations that they abused their authority in hiring and firing, and treatment of village employees and police officers.

Sauk Village Board Members were namely upset with Hill-Corley for missing a March deadline to apply for Illinois EPA grant money to repair water supply Well No. 3, which has been off-line since May 2009 when high levels of vinyl chloride were found in well groundwater, forcing Sauk Village officials to enlist the help of State Senator Toi Hutchinson, who brokered a deadline extension which will help the village apply for loans to repair the well.

Then there was the reported and witnessed altercation between Hill-Corley and a Sauk Village resident at an open board meeting. The sad truth is that someone with Hill-Corley's education and background could be held accountable for such events which she apparently was actively and willfully part of.

One can only surmise that an impressive biography doesn't always mean the person equipped with such credentials is capable of using them. It's like buying and expensive sports car capable of speed and handling beyond belief of its specifications, but you don't know how to shift the transmission.

With this page of Sauk Village issues closed, hopefully the Board and remaining Administration can get on with serving the people.

its funny because "WHAT" is just so angry that he seems to pick an arguement about anything anyone posts, and then just babbles on for the sake of arguing. you keep going on & on and yet to prove a point, about anything. relax. what are u so mad about? here's a reality check: this is just a topic forum and people can share their opinions freely, without being attacked left and right. let's be civil with eachother because not everyone thinks the same way you do, perhaps some people have higher IQs!! i mean god forbid someone dosent agree with you, get over it.
the village employees the were recently taken out of office has been a step in the right direction. hill corley is, and police chief martin was another mistake. just the progress/ work that has been accomplished since they have been gone has been more than when they were here! now thats a fact!

Humm, So why are you directing your post to me ? hahahaha So according to your own words I have a right to my opinion. The attacking part...hummm Almost every post attacks someone in the administration. Nasty names even for some of them. Its obvious that you just don't agree with whom I am attacking...,..can't have it both ways Mr. or Mrs. IQ... This isn't just a story. it's the truth. She did try to make a report against the guy who tried breaking up the fight she started. This woman has no damn clue!! And yes Benson and Towers did escort her to the station and argued the fact that the police denied her the report. wth is up with that bs!!

Discussing IQ's, nasty comments, and all the other unrelated things doesn't change a thing. Especially the facts that remain to be considered like:

The Chief of Staff position was created by Mayor Towers himself, and he cast the tie-breaking vote to put Hill-Corley in that position at 96,000 a year.

She missed key deadlines such as the funding application deadline for grants to fix the contaminated well 3 with the IEPA, causing the Village to solicit assistance from Rep. Toi Hutchinson.

Last Thursday during a Special Session meeting, the Board voted 4-1 to permanently eliminate the Chief Of Staff position.

The whole thing wreaks of nepotism and jobs being created by Towers for his "Political Party" friends and then expects Citizens of Sauk Village to pay for ineptness and incompetence.

These are the FACTS of the matter. Whether you have an IQ of 40 or 140, whether you want to be angry at one another for posts, these facts are constant. Let's just hope the Board can avert the oncoming cataclysmic onslaught of lawsuits and financial disdain that lies ahead of our town.

Hey Brunetta, just a friendly reminder your Cook County Court call case number 2010-L-008087 is scheduled for motion calls you filed against the Village is tomorrow at 9:30 A.M. so don't be late.

That's right Sauk Village Residents! Brunetta has filed (yet ANOTHER) suit against Sauk Village most likely for either contract dispute, wrongful termination, or is suing to get her job back. The Village Board better have all its nuts in one sack for this one, cause if they don't, the Village most likely will have to honor and PAY HER for the rest of her contract. A contract position with Sauk Village created by Mayor Towers himself just so she could be hired as Chief Of Staff.

And now she's suing the very same Village and Mayor that gave her the position. Even though her termination was upheld for just cause, this is yet another suit the Village (and Taxpaying residents) will have to pay legal defense money to.

And we expect our water to be fixed? Our town to be protected by adequate policing? And the town's financial woes to be straightened out by Mayor Towers? Maybe if there is any money left over from paying his Publicist, the lawyer that is present and advising him at Board Meetings (billable time) not to mention court appearances for defending the Village against suits from people he hired.

The next Mayoral Election can't get here fast enough for me. I might even vote early just to make sure the rest of this Towers train wreck gets cleared out, so we can get back on track in Sauk Village.

I can't believe that the Mayor is going around blaming everybody but himself about the condition of the community. Citizen morale is gone and "Big Bird" was busy trying to do everything else but take care of his community. Let's face it we elected a total idiot and he's got the nerve to have selected a slate of people to run with and help him completely ruin our community. That COS debacle cost us plenty and it may cost us more. Whatever happened to the football money that was reportedly taken and misused? We need outside help to rid us of this nutcase.

He does not care because he does not live in the community. We should have checked his residency before we voted for him.

But remember people, he sued Trustee Burgess because of his petitions stating that Burgess did not live in the village, even though Burgess was already a trustee. He took the case all the way to the Appellate court. Do you think he'll sue himself to confirm his residency??? Sounds like the same tactic they used against Barack Obama...not being a US citizen even though he was born in Hawaii AFTER Hawaii became a state!!! But let's not forget, we voted overwhelmingly for this Village Idiot!!! He won at a 2 to 1 margin.... P.S. you better keep your eyes on the School Board...they are about to vote in a statue that will give them the right to attend conferences and be entitled to reimbursements of costs without prior approval of the board!!! The Mayor has tenacles all over our great city and south suburbs.

Glad you asked You Know Who ! You can go directly to the case status at:

https://w3.courtlink.lexisnexis.com/cookcount...

Oddly enough a contract dispute has somehow been transferred out of the Civil division to the Law division. Basically, she's suing the Village, all of the Trustees, and has omitted Mayor Towers and (oddly enough) Enoch Benson. She is also suing Ed Shankel who is defending himself (Pro Se) along with Rosie Williams as well.

She's suing for $50,001 dollars - the amount to dodge mandatory arbitration at this stage, and it appears the Village has demanded a Jury trial. You can visit this link over and over to check the status as much as you want. That is, as long as it isn't transferred back to civil division.

Should be interesting to watch! Funny how she left out Mayor Towers and Enoch Benson from the suit.

Ah, but she sued Sauk Village...doesn't she and her lawyer know that ALL elected officials of Sauk Village represent Sauk Village? Or perhaps they are stating that Towers, Benson and Anderson don't really represent Sauk Village, you think?

I found it odd as well Not A Clue! It gives a glimpse of her logic and what alliance she was set with. I mean after all, Francine and Enoch got their jobs from Towers too!

Simply put, Towers thought he was going to be Mayor of Sauk Village, with absolutely NO POLITICAL OFFICE EXPERIENCE, have some of his friends of the Bloom Township Democratic Committe back him (Through his connections at the Cook County Assessors Office) Put all of his cronies in office, and not even have people question it.

This is the level of arrogance this sitting Mayor has. He thinkg he needs a publicist! Maybe he should have his publicist drop off his lawn mower for repairs next time.

And now because his Political HACKNESS hired this huge mistake of a Chief Of Staff or any other public figure position bestowed upon her, the Village faces yet ANOTHER lawsuit it must defend itself against. Lawsuit defenses cost money Mayor Towers. Money Sauk Village doesn't have to pay its employees and Police Officers.

I count the days until the next election. I hope David Hanks or Derreck Burgess have been paying attention here. I CERTAINLY gave them enough information between the Ace Hardware debacle, his claiming of homeowner's excemption on TWO HOMES his home in Sauk Village and in Chicago, WHILE WORKING FOR THE COOK COUNTY ASSESSOR'S OFFICE, failing to come up with an IEPA acceptable water cleanup plan even though he hired K-Plus Engineering, and the trainwreck left by his appointments and Chief Of Staff in the no less than 10 Lawsuits that followed their hiring, I think we can come up with some GREAT ammunition why Sauk Village NEEDS to vote for expierience next time.

By the way, the September Sauk Talk has been posted on the Village website (Sigh) and oddly enough, "No articles have been submitted by the deadline for: The Mayorís Corner, Economic Development, Parks and Recreation, Ordinance Review, Housing Authority, and Public Works.

Let's see....Publicist wasn't available to speak for him, no economic infrastructure left to develop, STILL looking for the football money to give back to parents, can't figure out how to enforce ordinances we already have, PLENTY Section 8 homes for rent, and no comment so I don't lose my job pretty much sums that all up.

Police Chief Holevis has great news though, and even though they may not get paid next month, they continue to catch burglary suspects and crimminals. Again nice work Tim and his hard working officers.

Some other positive stuff from Fire Department and of course the Back To School picnic. So not all doom and gloom.

Sauk Village Voice, I recall Burgess hosting two Showcases this July for the businesses located in Surreybrook Plaza and Sauk Plaza. This event was created so that the residents could show support for the remaining businesses in town and attempt to counter the negative publicity the Mayor caused with Ace Hardware. Even though the 4-hour sale events were not overwhelmingly supported by residents, the businesses did report an "uptick" in the amount of sales made during this period of time. The businesses voiced their appreciation of the Economic Development Committee's efforts to help portray a positive event. Why Burgess decided not to post his committee's efforts are unknown, but he knows that this village is in a fight for its very existence.

Yes, and I agree. We could use some good news like that to be published, so it is a bit puzzling to wonder why it wasn't published. Derek has promoted existing businesses and held these avants and his efforts are to be applauded. What we need is to fill the vacant stores - The old Blockbuster would make a GREAT Advanced Auto or Autozone, or even a Murray's Auto Parts as there are no auto parts stores in town. Or how about making a medical group practice a sweet deal with the building owner, and getting some of the vacant businesses filled.

I voted for Burgess in the last election. I felt he was most qualified, had most time in town and on the Board, and had a good handle on Village affairs as bad as they were. If David Hanks would have run as well, it would have been a tough choice as both are in my opinion equally as qualified to be Mayor, And at least TWICE as qualified as Towers.

As I said with regard to the Police work with catching the burglary suspects - There are those in this town that truly care and have their heart in their task of public service. Now only if our business blacklisting of Ace Hardware Mayor were as much on board as Burgess, we'd have a chance. Burgess and Hanks along with the other Board members remain steadfast to see the Village through these tough economic times, that are universal across many South Suburb communities today.

So in digression, it wasn't right to discount the work of Economic Development, but if all we have to go on is what we see, and what has already taken place, and not seeing any new or expanding businesses in town, it is easy to make the mistake. Thanks for bringing it to light though..
