SAUK VILLAGE- For the first time in the Village’s history, a political party will run in this years consolidated municipal election. Each election held in Sauk Village for Mayor, Village Clerk and Trustees has been on an independent and non-partisan basis, that is until today.

Today, the “Citizens for Progress” Party filed nominating petitions for all offices up for grabs in the upcoming election in April. Heading up the field is Lewis Towers for Mayor, Debbie Williams for Village Clerk- her daughter Rosie Williams for Village Trustee and Edward Myers also for Village Trustee. Myers, ran previously unsuccessfully for Village Trustee and also served as the Village’s Code Enforcement and Building Director. He also serves on the Village’s fire department.

For many years people running for Village Trustee, Mayor and Village Clerk were accused as running as a “slate” yet were running independent. This year that completely puts that rumor to rest.

The Citizens for Progress Party has not released its platform or any other press release and has not made a formal announcement, but pending any objections or challenges to their nominating petitions, they will be on the ballot this April.

Also filing today, the first day to do so and running as an independent candidate for Mayor- Derrick Burgess who is a current Village Trustee, for independent Village Clerk Elizabeth Zupon who is the incumbent Village Clerk and for independent Village Trustee James Slawnikowski, who is also like Rosie Williams an incumbent Village Trustee.

Current Village Trustee James Schultz is rumored not to be running for re-election. Village Trustee David Hanks is said to be "weighing his options" and discussing the possibility with his wife. Filing remains open until next Monday, January 26th according to the Village Clerk’s office so you'll have to stay tuned.

If either Towers or Burgess is successful in their effort to become mayor of Sauk Village, they would become the Village’s first African-American mayor in the Village’s 52 year history. Rosie Williams became the first African-American Village Trustee when she was elected in 2005. The first African-American to run for Village Trustee was Dr. Milton Curry in 1991, he was unsuccessful a

I forgot one Trustee candidate Enoch Benson, who filed with the Citizens for Progress Party. My appologies for the oversight.
