Van Campen calls for probe of local election process

By The Advocate

EVERETT - Ald. Robert Van Campen is calling for an investigation into the fraudulent absentee ballot scheme that cost the city’s state representative his House berth.

The Ward Five Alderman disclosed yesterday that he has filed a motion for Monday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting that seeks to assure the people of Everett that its future elections will be “fair, transparent and free of any fraud”.

Van Campen’s motion asks that representatives of the offices of the Secretary of State, the U.S. Attorney, and the local city clerk be requested to appear at the Jan. 28th meeting of the Board of Aldermen “to discuss concerns surrounding the conduct of elections in the city of Everett, especially relating to the use and submission of absentee ballots”.

The Alderman also wants to specifically discuss the recent criminal indictment and resignation of Everett’s state representative Stephen “Stat” Smith due to voter fraud charges stemming from the deliberate abuse of the absentee ballot procedure.

The investigation called for by Ald. Van Campen comes on the heels of a claim by federal prosecutors that Smith wasallegedly “helped” in his absentee ballot scheme “by one or more government officials”.

Secretary of state William Galvin, the state’s top election official by virtue of his office, has stated that if the allegation that Smith had “accomplices” proves to be true and if the individuals are identified, he would have to “remove them” from their positions.

In addition, Galvin has also stated that “if there is an issue of any illegal activity in Everett, I want to know the details before there’s another election there”.

such a fraud....a day late and a dollar short. Shouldn't he have figured out something a long time ago? After all when a guy gets a ton of absentee ballot votes in his favor shouldn't someone have noticed?
And some people want this guy for mayor!! Not me!

You are so wrong. People have been complaining about this for years and the people at the state level who should have looked into these issues (and others) have turned a blind eye. State Ethics always says it is OK that things have been done in Everett that way so it continued. The AG's office also had not desire to do anything. It took someone with federal clout to get something done and we all know where that clout came from

So why didn't he go to someone on the Federal Level 5-10 years ago? After all, as you say, he knew it was happening?

My personal feeling is that we all know who has a close associate with DC connections and he finally got what he wanted by getting this person involved. I'm not convinced that just anyone would have been able to have the same results--and we don't know who actually tried. I prefer to believe that it was not something that was easy to do and that after so many times being rejected by the state, the feds were contacted by someone with connections. No matter how these people in local office act, they are thrown to the wolves by the people on these blogs. Let's just hope that the investigation is ongoing and that all Everett elected officials will be looked at equally and not given a pass because they have money or connections. Maybe they will look at election fraud not just in Everett, but in the whole state and even the whole country. This just makes it more difficult to accept the idea of internet voting.

How do you know that he didnt? The feds dont work too fast. We had an elected official rig an election. These buffoons have taken everything from us. They destroyed this city by their greed and incompetance. We have one guy who has the courage to speak up and you take him to task for that. Unbelievable!

Are you referring to Robert for Mayor...., Rug Doctor?

What could he have possibly have done PRIOR to any charges being brought forth?

It's the city clerk and the administration that should have noticed bags and bags of absentee ballots coming in at the same time and NO ONE verified them to be true.

What on earth does Robert Van Campen have to do with that!?

Sounds to me like Robert is making some people nervous. Good, he should.

What's more important here is the issue at hand, and that is our civil liberties have been violated. Stat Smith's opponent in 2010 was cheated out of $37,000.00 and we all were cheated out of a fair election. Wether you liked the opponent or not, it does not matter who it was. Stat is going to enter a plea tomorrow at 2:00pm in federal court and all his accomplices get away with it.

Aint ya proud to say ur from Evrerett.....NOT!

The State will take action if others were involved and State Election Laws were violated. This matter is not over yet.

I hope so, but I don't know about that. I think the plea gets entered tomorrow, a sentence gets determined, and the case will be over. That's what I'm hearing. It's totally WRONG if that's what's allowed to happen.

Knowing and proving it are two different things. It has been written anout in local papers the number of absentee ballots, but you need to provide something substantial to justify their looking into something. It could always be a case of an opponent trying to create trouble.

That's the Federal case. If Secretary of State William Galvin obtains names from the Federal prosecutors or the Federal Court that shows Massachussets Election Statutes were violated, he can ask the state's Attorney General or the Middlesex County District Attorney to bring criminal action against anyone who violated the election statutes.

The Federal violations, and violations of the State Election laws are separate and independent actions of each other. The state actions can be brought at anytime irrespective of the dates set for March and April to elect a new State Representative.

Everett politics leave a bad taste in your mouth. If you don't kiss ass or are part of the click you can't get anything done. The hacks, corruption and rubber stamping just makes you not want to vote. Wonder why not one everett paper reported the shot gun hold up of Walgreens? Once again politics at play, it beginning to stink from the top down and there all involved.

The facts as I see them is the election process in Everett has been tampered with. The Federal government and State government should investigate. This is one of our rights as AMERICANS. Anyone who tampers with this should be investigated and if found guilty should pay a heavy price.
