Hi Joanne,
The house up the road for retreats and days off was St. Francis. It looked like St. Clare's near the chapel. It had a big field in front of it that we occasionally would bring the campers to for evening activities. Kevin Kennedy (the present owner of camp grounds) and his family now live in St. Clare's.

The name Pat Kingston rings a bell. What did she do? Did Miss Joyce have a niece nicknamed "Bubbles"?
FYI: "Bubbles" was not Miss Joyces' niece.

Anyone remember a counselor named Ms Mary Hume?

Nope, sorry.
The only "Mary" I know as a counselor is "Mary Toomey".[sp.?]

I know that house quite well.
I was so jealous of it in that they had a TV in there! lol

Anyway, the reason for this post ....
I think I may've found "Miss Paula" -- the swimming instructor from the last few years.
I stumbled across this > http://sched.sbu.edu/faculty/pscraba/
There's an email address attached to it and I think it *might* be the "Miss Paula" I'm thinking of, so I sent off a quick note & directed her to this website.
Here's hoping ....

You're right.
I emailed her & she answered, literally, in seconds ....
It is, indeed, her.
She asked how I found her, what I'm doing, etc.
She also said she would pass along my email to a couple of nuns.
Presumably, they've something to do with CaSH.

Made my day, her email did. lol
Hopefully, she'll add some stuff here, too.
I forgot to ask about pictures, but when she shows, I'll bring it up then.

Does the internet rock or what? lol

There were definitely brothers who were in charge of the boys camp area. I remember them distinctly but oddly enough when the boys played baseball and the entire camp attended the brothers were not there. I would see the brothers in the distance in the area going towards the boys area. One girl whose brother was there told me her brother told her some of the boys got beaten and "messed with"by the brothers who wore brown habits like Franciscan's so maybe they weren't Christian Brothers as I noted in a another post. About maligning and expressing rage at this camp - if you had seen what I saw you would change your tune. Some men here have been honest about their experiences and have every right to finally let it be known.
I worked in the boys unit. There were only female attendents. Teen girls and nuns. No brothers or priests of any order.

I've read every message on this topic ever since I was fortunate enough to discover
this discussion on what is, for me, one of THE greatest places on Earth:
that being Camp St. Helene in the early 70s.

I don't remember Melanie's comment at all.
But I'm not gonna re-read through SIX pages of comments just to find it,
so I'm just gonna assume that someone named "Melanie" did, in fact,
say what's written here & that "Melanie" also is accurately quoting others' statements.

Let me talk about what I know first hand ....
Like Sharon says, in UNIT: St. Anthony's [the boys section of the camp]
we only had teen girl counselors, many of them
from the same township in Jersey, apparently! lol

The ONLY nun I ran saw was the nurse who had
her infirmary off to the side of the pools.

The ONLY priest I saw was, of course, Father Francis [yes, he had the brown Franciscan robe tied with the white rope with knots in it] who ALWAYS had
a smile & a wave for any camper who passed him by.
He introduced me to Cardinal Cooke of NYC when he paid a visit one summer.

As far as being "messed with" goes, all there was, as far as I know, was the
occasionally sneaked kiss & hug from one of the counselors.
Again, this was the early 70s, the post-hippie era, and these were healthy,& attractive
teen girls with boys who were just a year or two away from puberty,
so honestly I don't see anything really wrong with that.

I remember you Helaine and Paulette. I was a Camp Service Girl then counselor in Sacred Heart. 1967-1969. I remember twin counselors, Debbie and Liz. Valerie, Jeannie, Anna, Helen. Sister Pamela, Sister Noreen. And I swear Sister Patricia never slept!

We should start a Camp St. Helene page on Facebook and see what happens!

Actually, that's a great & OBVIOUS idea!
Now why didn't *I* think of that ....
Probably has something to do with my loathing of FaceBook.
Oh, well. A CSH FaceBook page I'd be into.

I was a camper first and then a counselor. The director' name was Ursla and the nuns where there too. The boys camp was across the creek. I have great memories of the camp. I am now 65years old and was there when I was 12-16. So sad about the camp. My foster parents worked at Camp Hayes in Godeffroy NY so I lived as a camper my whole youth it was wonderful!

Sven=Steven. Interesting. Didn't know that.
There *was* a guy counselor named "Steve" in USA during my
last year there, 1973. He stayed in a seperate cabin off from the others.
If you leave the USA unit house and go straight down that pathway
for a bit, his cabin was on the right ajoining an open field.
It, the cabin, was red.

I went there in 1960 and 1961 I think. Loved living in a cabin. Hated most of the nuns. Counselor raided the stash of goodies my mother sent me. We used to have to give our letters to counselor unsealed do she could read it. I often left off the stamp do she would give it back, I'd switch the letter I really wanted to send and seal. She never figured it out.

Jesus, ripping off CARE packages & reading mail?!?
That's, um, weird .... lol

The only similiar thing I can think of was that they discouraged being sent goodies,
because, in thier inimitable words, it would attract rodents & vermin.

Well, that didn't stop me from being sent a box jam-packed with
Nabisco Sugar Wafers, strawberry Twizzlers & a MAD magazine 3 times a Summer!
WOOOOOT!
