I think this new ban is a little overkill. I can see not allowing smoking inside places. I can't stand smoke in restaurants, bars, etc. But 25 ft from doors and windows is a bit much. Cigarette smoking is for knobs anyway, it is so expensive and bad for health. I like occasional cigar, but much different than smoking a pack or more of cigs a day. I am not in Pittsburgh and don't know why I keep coming up that way in my Topix posts.

Smoking and bon fires are really hell on people with respiratory problems. Neighbors who smoke in their yards next to boundary lines should smoke in their houses, so they can reap the effects of their smoking, instead of forcing it on others. Bon fires in town, should be illegal and subject to hugh fines, because of the chance of burning down the neighborhood. I can't have a burning barrel with a mesh lid because of fire danger, but an open pit bon fire is less of a danger. Go Figure.

I did research on this for a college paper. There was a shopping mall in West Virginia that put in a smoking room. It was totally insulated, so NO smoke got out and had good air filtration inside. The thought was in trying to keep the business of smokers by providing this service, while keeping the non-smoking vigilantes from being upset.

It did not work. The non-smokers put up a big stink (ha ha) because there was no 'special' room for them...

The issue is about MORE than smoking, to me. It is totally about elitism and trying to control the behavior of others. The majority of non-smokers will not own up to it, of course.

I still have not betrayed the mantra of my youth -

"Live and let live".
