Natrona Heights Memories

I am going to talk a little about my memories from when I lived in Natrona Heights from 1963 tgo 1969. I have been away from NH now for longer than I want to admit but have visited there several times. A lot of things have changed, but I still see the old NH there. You people might not realize it, but your area is beautiful. The Heights Plaza was the place to go. On a hot summer afternoon or evening, a cold Lemon Blend and a Klondyk at Isley's. Some bowling at Plaza Lanes. Then a stop at The American Raceways. You could rent a slot car and controller and get 20 minutes of track time for less than a buck. Don't forget the ballgame busses to Forbs Field for games (yes I am that old). Just about all of us kids had PAT bus passes. Remember if you wanted to go to a movie, you had to go to Tarentum to the Manos. At Birdville school, I think wee had the best teachers in the world. Mrs. Hamilton for first grade. Her favorite slogan was, "more fun than a barrel of monkeys", and she did find ways to make a lot of work kinda fun. There was a short gray haired lady, Mrs. Travis. She was the music teacher who would visit each classroom once each week. When Mrs. Travis entered the room, she started singing. Either a good morning or a good afternoon song. You might feel bad or mad, but in just a very few minutes, Mrs. Travis had everyone singing and happy. I don't think I ever saw her that she didn' have a smile on her face. Mr. Davidek, a fifth grade teacher, was the teacher I most looked up to. He was allways ready to help you with anything and explane some of that crazy modern math that we were saddled with. There was a PSP Trooper Posney. He came to school and did a magic show with hidden safety messages. Trooper Posney, thank you for planting the seed in my mind that resulted in my learning magic.

In my last post, I mentioned The American Raceways. I should have said, The American Family Raceways. They had 3 very nice slot car tracks with cars for rental if you didn't have your own. Most of us kids, and a lot of the dads and even some grand fathers had cars and loved to run them either for just fun or to race them for braggin' rights. I remember, one night sometime in the summer of 1967, I think, I walked ovrt to the AFR to run a car some and play some pinball and when I got to the front, the window just to the right of the main entrance had a large display of model rockets. The rocket that would get everyones eye was a 1/70 scale model of the Saturn 1b. The rest of the rockets all were differnt sizes and colors. On a Saturday a couple of weeks later, a rocket club from a school over in Fox Chapple. The teacher who had built that beautiful Saturn 1b model was there with the kids and I do believe just about of the moms, dads, brothers, sisters, hamsters and even a pet snake was there to support the kids. So, the launch pad is all set up. The parking lot is roped off and the launch pad area is roped off. Three rockets were on the pads and ready. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. The button is pushed, and an Estes Mars Snooper leaves the pad and streaks into the sky. It went to at least 700 feet before a parachute deployes and brings it back to the ground. That was all it took for several uf us to get hooked on model rocketry.
