I just unwrapped my Outside magazine and it includes one of those goofy articles about the 20 best towns in the U.S. It started me wondering about the best towns in the North Country.

I am thinking of going to Saranac lake with my husband to live. What is a nice area of Saranac Lake to live ? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to the move and I'm looking forward to meting new people. The only ? I have is are the stores for food/clothing/doctors/post offices etc in a reasonable distance or is it a long drive to a different town for those amenities? Also, what is the best town to live that is close to the main shopping area? thanks so much and hv a great night all

Best Adirondack (well partially, anyway) Town where you are close to everything: Queensbury between Lake George and Glens Falls.

Actually, wholly in the Adirondack Park, I'd prefer Saranac Lake - Lake Placid - Wilmington; At the Eastern edge, Keeseville.

I think farthest from eveything is Newcomb!

Linda, there are lots of places in Saranac Lake. Live on French Hill and you'd swear you were in Appalachia; live on Mt. Pisgah and you'd think you were in heaven. The town has a great spirit, and no matter where you live, you can't beat that. As far as us being near stores, well, there are three big grocery stores, shoe outlets, good restaurants, lots of hardware stores, auto repair places, massage theapists, hotels, a theater, all within 8 miles. People who love to complain that there's no Wal-Mart will tell you how you "can't buy a pair of underwear without driving 50 miles to Plattsburgh!" Well, they're not exactly right, as you can buy boxer shorts in the Gap Outlet in Placid; but even so, what is there that you can't buy online? And if everything were right next door to us, we'd lose this special small town character.

Oh, and we have a great school district. I'm a teacher in a different district, and I wish my school had the scores that Saranac Lake CSD has.
