An account by Sunland Park's second-highest official raises a question about whether councilors may have again violated a state sunshine law in appointing a mayor earlier this week.

If we're going for cities of somewhat comparable size then I'm voting for Raton, New Mexico as being in the running with the worst that Sunland Park has to offer.(Hell, our city commissioners even tried to hire Jaime Aguilera: before he was fitted for that nice orange suit with bracelets.)

Arguably, the main difference being: you folks at least have an effective media, watching what is going on. Be thankful for that much, at least! It may get boring hearing bad news, but it's far more frustrating to know it's happening, but to have no media that is willing to tell others about it.

The Raton Range newspaper essentially died this summer. It was just got sold "on the courthouse steps" earlier this month. In the past it was pretty much just them and one radio station. "All the news that's fit to suppress" seems to be the station's motto, when it comes to (not) reporting anything the local bigshots don't want to be widely known. Another newspaper is starting up, but a lot of news is slipping through the cracks in the meantime; with no guarantees it will ever improve; or that the real news will be exposed.

Count your blessings, Sunland Park!
