Skateparks are a purpose built facility specifically designed for the use of BMX bicycles, skateboards, inline skates and scooters. These types of freestyle sports are rapidly growing in popularity. Events such as X-Games and the DEW tour, coupled with the media coverage of these types of events, have given individuals the opportunity to make these types of sports into a career. However without a safe, controlled, environment to begin the pursuit of the dream of being a professional, Spring Hill can never see one of it’s own at X-Games.

“Instead of treating skateboarders as common hoodlums, one might ask, why not simply provide legitimate skateparks in the kids’ neighborhoods, just as we provide tennis courts, swimming pools, and soccer fields?”
J. William Thompson (Architect)
March 1998 of Landscape Architecture

Currently, in Spring Hill, enthusiasts are often told to leave the property in which they are enjoying their sport. In some cases they must deal with law enforcement for doing something that to them feels essentially harmless. Naturally, the result of this treatment is a sense of disconnection to their home community, Spring Hill. This regrettable course of events creates at-risk youth and is easily prevented by the creation of a skatepark in Spring Hill. When a person is treated as a criminal, often times they will begin to behave as a criminal. Building a skatepark in Spring Hill addresses these issues and reduces the problems associated with enthusiasts using public streets, sidewalks, and private property.

Skateparks provide a place for enthusiasts who are not attracted to conventional “team” sports a place to express themselves in an individual and athletic manner. Also, this type of facility would bring local youth into an environment that would allow them to socialize, and build relationships with others in Spring Hill based on a common interest in these type of sports.
The benefits of a Spring Hill Skate Park far outweigh the costs. Skateparks provide a place to develop healthy active lifestyles and encourage youth to spend more time outside. In essence, rather than playing a video game, be the video game.

How in the world is this spam, nuts or clueless at all? Are you really threatened of children and young adults that participate in a sport of their choosing? I have some news to you, this is one of the only well thought out non-gossip threads on our local topix at this time. This is in no way spam and it will not be removed and rightfully so.
The only option you have left, Sam, is for no one to do any of the activities listed in the proposition of this petition. Alright, lets make a petition to ban all skateboarding, inline skating and scooter related activites because these children are obviously nothing bad news. Lets not give them a place to enjoy these activities out of your way, give you space between you and your apparently hated rivals in this world of ours. They're taking your space up, but lets not give them any of their own away from hateful people like you, no.
While we are at it, lets ban football fields and tennis courts because we all know every ball player is nothing but a bully jock and all tennis players are nothing but yuppies using their money to get their way. You're a bright one, aren't you, lad?
What a preposterous idea, a skatepark. How dare someone decide to petition for something they love that you hate to keep them away from you and in their own area. Skaters are all thieves and lowlifes, is that it? Obviously this participant in the sport, petitioning this knows better skills such as typing correctly (note your error in "reported at spam") and making a coherent and well put argument than you do. Let your freak flag fly, Sam, as well as let your true lack of intelligence shine and make you and the community proud to have you there. Well done, mate.

It's not spam. Just because you don't like the idea of something doesn't make it spam people. Good luck with your petition. I think we need something for the youth in the city. Everyone who has marked this as spam, do you have a suggestion of where the youth should hang out? Right now they are just going around vandalizing things.

If a skate park is wanted, then it should be provided PRIVATELY. I have no problems with a skate park being built, but not with city funds. A park like this may serve the 'needs' of those in the sport, but not the general community.
A private individual has a gold mine opportunity to make some good cash, and a the same time the city collecting the taxes from the private park.
If the city runs the park, what about liability when some kid gets seriously hurt.Is there a waiver in place to imdemnify the city from damages? Maybe the user will have to buy their own insurance for the day to use the park? That would be fair.
If the city needs to make a park, it should be a multipurpose use park. Do not make a city run park that caters only to a small group of people.
Let's persue a private operator such as other cities have across the USA. The kids will have what they want, without the cost to the city.
If you come up with a petition to have a prvate in the city, then I will happily sign it.

Can we attach to your petition a request to build a pickleball court in the city? Us pickleballers dont want to be left out!

Yes, lets petition pickleball, tiddlywinks, marbles, badminton and all other niche sports. Each citizen will have their custom made park at city expense. Great idea!
I do wish people would stip saying that paople who are against the skatepark hate skaters. Far from it. It has nothing to do with drug prevention and keping 'at risk' kids out of trouble. That's a seperate issue.
The main issue is that the grant was for "parks and recreation" in general. NOT specifically a skate park.
The above poster had a good idea, have a private owner build a skate/BMX park. Assume all the liability, not the city. Use the 100K for a regular park, with trees, benches picnic areas.
I can understand why some think skaters are 'criminals. No doubt they do get onto private property and do damage. Just because there is no skate park, is no excuse to tresspass and damage property.
Why don't these kids pool their money (and their "highly supportive" parent's money) and buy a little plot of land to start a small park? If it is successful, great. If it flops, no harm done and no waste to the city's resources.

Williamson County Parks and Recreation has already built and maintains a memorial skate park in Franklin TN. This is not a foreign idea. The Idea to create a public skate park managed by the city is already in the works. http://columbiadailyherald.com/sections/news/...

Spam? Dumb Idea? I think not. I believe your petition worked!!!

I think if you're going to pitch the skate park... giving a theory that it will keep skate kids from crime is probably not the best pitch. It's almost an admission or indication that they do commit crimes or get into trouble and this is a anti-crime solution. Just saying that I'd probably just pitch it for the kids.

Good luck with the petition.

Anyone that has negative thoughts towards the skate park idea probably have no lives whatsoever. Whether its your marriage, hate your job, no life etc. Maybe you just wish you had some motivation to pull that heavy load off the couch...It's going to happen. Save your energy to put towards something that will actually help someone or something.

It really must be a horrible feeling to be as closed minded as you are. Even dumber is allowing morons like you to have a chance to comment. I believe we have a sour moron alert here!! My bet is that you don't do anything fun and/or are alone in life.

So because we dont agree with public money being spent on this project we somehow have no lives whatsoever? Perhaps when you begin to pay property takes in this city and see the need for a ton of other things that would have an impact on a much bigger group of people you would then understand the reasons some people are against this.

Amusing to say the least.. Considering the city HAS BUILT the skatepark and it is getting great press and reviews.. Can't wait for it to open here this month, I believe it will expose a lot of kids who didn't have the opportunity to the creative and competitive nature and wonderful sport that skateboarding is. With regards to the other comments, there are already city run multi-purpose parks that exist with more being built or plans for them to be built. As to the other 'amusing' comments about pickleball, etc.. When pickleball has garnered enough support, has the same level of financial impact as skateboarding (or other similar sports) has the same level of interest and draw from the youth as skateboarding as well as same level of organization nationally.. then sure, knock yourself out!

Derek, the other multi-use parks funded by our taxes have a bigger percent of the population using them which justifies the expense. As far as support for skateboarding, what funds have been raised by everyone wanting this park? And what financial impact are you referring to in your above post? As far as national organizations, is there one that is helping with the local skatepark here?
