Here today, gone tamale. Great folks at Spex. Very kind
and would repair glasses, even if not purchased there.
Again, the big chains like Costco put another business gone.
Shame on you, bix box stores!

It is not the big box stores, it is the care for money not community that only the stockbrokers and corporate greed relish in. Was a nice town!

Yes. Shame on Costco for lower prices. Sounds like you'd prefer higher prices for those of us who are satisfied with Costco.

We used to buy glasses at Spex Appeal, but after we had a series of problems with orders we took our business to a nearby locally-owned optician. It was a change for the better.

Nothing wrong with costco, the opticians lease space from them and are not Costco employees. Glasses are way over priced and the mark up is insane. Costco means even those with little means can afford glass and contacts,
Spex Appeal catered to the high end...

Hyper expensive eyeglasses from a small shop & hopefully given the cratered economy no one is surprised by this. As Warren Buffet says, when the tide goes out you get to see who isn't wearing a bathing suit.

Didn't Mitch Glanzbergh own Spex Appeal?

Members of my family buy their frames online because they get better deals there. They can't afford to pay the high prices for the same frames sold in places like Spex Appeal where they will not do any deals.

It's not the position of people on limited or low incomes to keep locally-owned, high-priced stores in business. Spex Appeal learned the hard way.

By the way, how did Judy McGooden happen to wheedle her way into this story. Did the reporter decide to give her an advantage over the other nearby optomitrists?

This is not so much an article about the closing of a shop as it is an advertisement for Judy McGooden's place. Does she know the reporter?

Crappy store. How they stayed in business this long is beyond me. Must have been a big demand for crappy overpriced garbage. Good riddance. Bye. Bye. You are the weakest link.

Yes, it's interesting to find out how much the mark-up really is on items like eyeglasses. As it is I have to limit my eye exams more than I should. If it weren't for Costco I probably wouldn't be able to afford a pair of glasses anymore at all... I can pay for a membership and still come out ahead there.

I knew someone who worked at Spex Appeal a long time ago & she said that she was amazed & somewhat horrified at the markup on frames with respect to prices. The owner would nonchalantly tell her to simply take their cost & put a sticker on the frames doubling or tripling whatever it was before & then put it in the display case.

I buy closeout frames online & I pay approximately 1/4 the cost or less what the exact SAME thing would cost locally. The only trick is to know your correct size, e.g.-bridge width, arm length, etc. & then go for the brand you want.

Fortiers in downtown SC used to be a really excellent place but it's changed hands & seems to have gone downhill.

Bought two pairs of glasses there probably 6-7 years ago and they were overpriced then.

I'm a person who went to Spex appeal years ago (just found this forum) and I was so bummed when they closed. I have a LIMITED income and Peter worked w/me and I bought a couple really super cool frames there and he worked w/me on the price of those, too, lowering the price and WORKING WITH ME! He also fit a pair of lenses to some frames of my own and did not charge me less for them at all. I don't know who you ppl are who said they didn't work w/you. Perhaps it's a personality clash. I saw Peter both talking on the phone and in person w/others and he was gracious, inviting and never rude. Never once.
