Achievement gap divides black, white students

Full story: Marin Independent Journal

Reading and math scores are rising for black students across the country, but not enough to close the gap between them and their better-scoring white peers, an Education Department report released Tuesday found.

No what makes all the difference in the world are parents that care about their kids and their education. The same Black, Brown, Asian and White kids can go to the same school but statitically the Asian and the White kids will fare better. It has nothing to do with cultural advantage, methodology or student teacher ratios it has everything to do with parents expecting and demanding their kids to achieve. When Black and Hispanic parents on average demand the same of their children then you'll see the disparity decrease or dissapear

You prove you are not familiar with pedagogy.

Learning is multi-faceted and requires a child's motivation as well as appropriate tools and a capable teacher. If a child is not taught to read in elementary schools, a child suffers throughout their schooling, without remediation.

Expectations don't help a child learn. Appropriate methodologies, effective teachers, and a child's personal motivation are key.

There are at least four zones of major responsibility.

Education, politics, media and parenting.

It's a shame.

I blame the Dirty Demos - especially every puddle of the slime behind our young community organizing socialist President.

You prove you aren't familiar with reality. Unless a child has a learning disability there is no reason they cannot learn to read or do basic math and to advance from there. The implication that somehow poor children have incompetent teachers is an issue for the school districts to handle as well as finding teachers who will quantify their students abilities honestly. Most kids are not withdrawn from learning especially if a teacher makes their curriculum biophilic in nature but either way hundreds of millions of people around the world learn to read, write and add even when taught through rote learning. The fallacy that nothing can be accomplished without the latest and greatest teaching methodologies which are a coverup for the inabilities of liberal teaching unions to educate minorities betrays history. It betrays history because when communities of color were expected to perform they did and do and not just in this country but all around the world. The common factor though is and has always been parents who expect their children to advance. It really is that simple and doesn't involve more money, smaller student/teacher ratios or new methodolgies that haven't proven their worth.

I agree. Culture, including family culture, is a significant determinant. Yes, good teachers matter, and so do decent schools. But a culture that values education and learning will make the best of ANYTHING.

White children in porr neighborhoods also have a hard time getting a decent education. So are you saying that black parents do a poor job encouraging their kids to learn. Facts are that kids do much better with smaller classrooms and with today's emphasis on computers in just about every endeavor, yes technology is needed. Your post is more of the right wing racist garbage we have all been subjected to since the economic slowdown. Used to be it was considered part of being a good citizen that if you did well you gave back to those less fortunate. Instead we are hearing form selfish ignorant people like yourselves that only care about your only needs. Go live somewhere else, preferably Iran!

Hey why don't you save this for your acceptance speech to your Black Uhuru brothers. If you had read the post correctly you would see I said parental involvement is one of if not the most important part of a student's approach to education. So what if poor White people get the same crappy education as poor Black children the student will still succeed if the parent is there pushing. As it now on average education is more important in the White and Asian communities than it is in the Black and Hispanic communities as evidenced by their success rates. Kids doing better in smaller classrooms is a motto of the Teachers Union who wants more teachers and dues members it has never been proven that smaller classrooms do better otherwise how do you explain the falling academic scores from the 70's to this century when classroom sizes were larger. Also computers are great but until they came along people survived learning the Library system and doing research on their own. Your post is more of the Left wing pseudobabble garbage society has been subjected to for the last 40 years and is nothing more than a monumental failure by inept greedy politically obsessed halfwits. If you want to be a good citizen then demand that the teaching establishment do it's job not run a social experiment that fails demonstrably. I would like to know how emphasizing parental involvement which is a proven ingredient in the success of students makes me a selfish ingnorant person who should move to Iran. Maybe you can enlighten me with a coherent explanation instead of throwing slurs but I doubt your level of intellect would let you achieve that. BTW here is a school in Oakland that achieves by doing rather than being a boorish synchopant who thinks spending money equates to success. Read the bottom of the page where it says 98% of the students are minorities many of them poor. Also read the part where it says for 78% of the students English is their 2nd language. It's underneath the part where their scores rate against some of the wealthier White and Asian School Districts in the state. It's proof that you are clueless idiot.

The more you attempt to explain your twisted educational theories, the more stupid you sound.
Nothing racist at all in what "Yep" has stated. Facts are facts, regardless of ones color. Why don't you just "shut up" before you make yourself look even more stupid. Just cease and desist while you remain so defeated in your logic.

It's been very well documented that blacks, on average have lower IQs.

Blacks evolved in a very different environment than whites. Nothing of scientific value or achievement has ever come out of sub-saharan Africa. Sub-saharan blacks never developed written language, formal education, or even the wheel until it was introduced by outsiders.

I don't know why everyone wants to ignore these facts that have been well known for centuries. Darwin knew this and so did Abraham Lincoln.

Why don't we spend the time trying to figure out why whites can't compete in basketball or football? Why is it okay to acknowledge physical differences but not intellectual differences?

Why would you assume that you could take a race of people who never developed a written language or math and drop them in an enviroment that did and assume everyone would be the same? Tens of thousands of years of evolution has led to whites, and particularly Asians to have higher intelligence than blacks. Rome was more advanced 2000 years ago than most of Africa is today. I don't see how you could want more proof than that.

Oh boy. As a white female I find your response racist, and your faith in the big bang worth a laugh.

Sigh.

A lot of those less fortunate would not be so unfortunate if they got a decent education. All children have the opportunity to learn...many of them do not have the backing of interested parents. The people you are calling selfish and ignorant are not the crux of the problem. It is the government, spurred on by lack of thought in citizens like you, who has created generations of welfare families with no desire to leave their cozy corners. Why should they when they have everything they need at their disposal? Have a child.....have six more----someone else will care for them, no problem. They are the selfish, ignorant ones.
