Not sure what to think about this one, I would hate to live above a chain smoker but to kick out an old woman because of it seems pretty harsh. I'm sure there's a common sense solution to this.

Actually, anyone who has made it to 90 smoking like a sheep on fire should be given a medal! What are their lungs made of!? Titanium!?

You are pretending that cigarette smoking isn't lethal? You are in denial.

That's the addiction speaking.

Baskin, huh? As Jack Webb used to say, "It figures..."

Well, let's not forget folks... Mike Rotkin wrote his thesis on Santa Cruz and how he affected and effected social change by tapping into the sponge-like brains of community studies students. Then Mike's other class on Marxist theory was used to spread the seeds of change throughout the community as well.

And there I was, 20 years ago today...with dirty Valentine Card in hand, trying to warn you all of what was coming if you didn't put the brakes on the spreading progressive cancer that was consuming your community.

So you wanted change, huh? Well congratulations. Welcome to the new politically correct version of out and out oppression of minorities. In this case the new progressive mantra has become, "If you don't quit, we will evict!" Has a nice catchy ring to it as do most progressive lines.

I am so sorry for the tragic consequences soon to be faced by these seniors. It seems like something could be done for them, if only air filtration units for a designated room within their own units.

If they are addicted then it is a medical problem. Are you suggesting the management evict people due to their disability/addiction? That would be a sure fire way to get sued.

I guess we should check their cabinets for any products containing high fructose corn syrup or partially hydrogenated artery clogger. Just as lethal as smoking(and if they offered any to their neighbors? the shame!!!), so toss 'em all out. These folks lived there BEFORE the pc police moved in. I hope they have to move next to you so they can blow their smoke up your A double scribble.

I am in agreement here with you.
Seems to me that providing an indoor area with good venelation or giving smokeless ashtrays (the kind that **** up the smoke) could help with the smokiness.
I used to smoke somewhere around twelve to more thyan twelve years ago and I can't stand the smell of smoke (I couldn't stand cig, pipe or cigar smoke even before I smoked! Oddly though if I smoked then I didn't vomit from the smell of smoke!
It is unlikely though that the non smokers bothered by the smell of smoke will be stupid enough to try my solution to the smoke queasy dilemma!
I still think we should let the elders smoke if they choose.
What a terrible thing to do to senior citizens...There has to be something they can do, build a small area with ventilation in the teeny little area they are allowed to smoke in so they don't have to freeze or get rained on or have heat stroke in the summer..I'm a smoker at 64...tried to quit many times but it's very difficult. I don't smoke in my home or my car but I do smoke under a covered patio so I don't get rained on. Do these units have "FANS" above their kitchen exaust? Can't they smoke in their units under these fans? The owner of this place is a moron to try to take the only pleasure these older folks have...they don't have much time as it is. I wonder if "Jack" keeps these units in tip top shape or if he's a slum lord..maybe he should be checked out.

Smoking is lethal to others. Fructose is not.

You're another idiot.

I suspect you are all smokers.

And I know you're morons.

If these seniors were smoking pot or connected to the corrupt Santa Cruz political machine in any way, there would be protests 24/7, UCSC students marching down Bay, a pot smoking civil rights sit in at San Lorenzo park, and every other pot smoking kook with a marijuana leaf cap and hemp tye die would be taking over the city council meeting until the politicians caved.

Santa Cruz hypocrisy at its best:

If you are old and smoke tobacco, you are evil and will get evicted from your home.

If you are young and smoke pot, every public, private, non-profit is expected to roll over for you and you can break the drugs laws with impunity.

They can still smoke outside 50 feet away. The rain will bother them?? Worried about their hair or catching cold? Smoking stinks. And it is unheathy for those of us who care about our lungs and hearts. Too bad they didn't have the balls to quit years ago. I just don't feel that sorry for them.

Name one provable death due to second hand smoke! You are a liar spreading the anti-smoking propaganda claiming thousands of deaths yet you can't prove one! Why are all of us baby boomers still alive???

Why should any facility, private or not, jump through hoops to accommodate smokers? Smoking is lethal and foul, and an assault on others besides the smoker. Yet this behavior should be tolerated?
WHY???
Sinajuavi - you seem to be in an unusually tolerant mood today. After reading so MANY of your obsessed posts, I'm surprised you haven't already stereotyped the seniors as as white racist AmeriKKKans. Well, the day's still young.

To the complex owners - at least have the decency to provide an outdoor smoking tent, like the city permits at the annual pot festival.

The John Stewart Co has been on a holy crusade for over 10 years now with the apartments they manage. Why? Because if a complex goes non-smoking, they can save their property owners a few bucks a year in lowered insurance costs.

That's a great idea. Let's throw all of the smoking seniors out in the streets, and then we can say they died from smoking-related diseases.

Seniors: Arm yourselves and protect your homes and way of life, regardless of your political views. Your rights are as valuable as any snotrags that wish to tell you how to live.

Why can't we all get a lung?

What about all them old goats who smoke weed and crack in their rooms? Do they have to stop to? I mean grandma likes her pipe, she has been smoking on that glass pipe for quite a long time now.
