Ryan Coonerty getting the "Hammer of Justice" award??? What for? For cutting back public comment at City Council meetings so the public has even LESS of a voice??? For making the parking lots downtown into "No trespass zones?" For supporting the SLEEPING BAN saying that if people SEE homeless people sleeping at night, it will cut off donations to homeless services and thus HURT homeless people???(apparently sleep deprivation and a criminal record DON'T hurt homeless people!!). Or maybe he gets his hammer for banning Bernard Klitzner and ME from Bookshop Santa Cruz for using the FREE SPEECH ZONE in front of Bookshop Santa Cruz for FREE SPEECH ACTIVITIES critical of government policy aimed at homeless people.

Maybe Rotkin can call the cops on HUFF members again!!

I agree with Becky. Just what has Ryan Coonerty done to deserve this honor? I would have written the exact same complaints about him.

Sounds like it is a political move on the ACLUs part. I sincerely want to know why they are bestowing this honor on him. Can anyone enlighten me?

Becky - there are five homeless men living behind the bushes at Plymouth and Button. Would you please take them home? My neighborhood has hosted them long enough.

My letter to the ACLU -

Dear ACLU,

I see that you will present Ryan Coonerty your Hammer of Justice Award at your upcoming Award Celebration. I would like to know why.

Mr. Coonerty has cut pack public comment at City Council meetings to 2 minutes. This is not adequate time to make a point, much less present an argument. The time was 3 minutes prior to Mr. Coonerty's enforcement of the shorter limit. He has effectively cut back free speech.

Mr. Coonerty was instrumental in passing the anti-loitering law in public parking lots. This law is completely unconstitutional. People have a right to gather in public spaces. The police used this law to target people gathering in the parking lot next to the Wednesday Farmer's Market. This is a law that was created to be selectively enforced. I see people sitting and sleeping in parked cars in the lots and they are not ticketed.

Mr. Coonerty supported the sleeping ban for homeless people. His reasoning - If people see homeless people sleeping on the streets they will not donate to homeless services makes absolutely no sense. Seeing people who have no where to go and are forced to sleep on the street is more likely to motivate people to donate money for more services.

So please do inform me as to what Mr. Coonerty has done to deserve the honor you are bestowing on him.

Sincerely,

Angela Flynn

BECKY: What would Jesus do? I think he might give them a blanket. He would certainly be kind and be sensitive to their suffering. He might even try to help them. Try it. It's good for the soul, they say.

That's right. And it's "Cruel and unusual punishment" to deny a homeless person the right to KEEP WARM with a blanket from 11PM to 8:30AM!!

Ryan Coonerty thinks this is just fine to cause hypothermia in homeless people!!

DOLORES WRITES: "Do you believe you conduct yourself as Jesus would?"

BECKY: Of course not. I'm an ordinary person who makes mistakes all the time. The expression "What would Jesus do?" is a common one. It works for folks who consider themselves Christian. Jesus healed the sick, fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and associated with thieves, prostitutes, and tax collectors. You can make a case that he was loving to everyone, even the homeless.

Christians often follow Jesus' example and set up soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and clothing drives. I support these. And to those people I ask, would Jesus have people who are too poor to afford an apartment or motel room arrested for SLEEPING? Would Jesus take away the only blanket a homeless man has (As Steve Clark has done) at 3AM on a cold night?

Santa Cruz ACLU chapter's inappropriate award to Ryan Coonerty
by Lydia Blanchard
Saturday Aug 23rd, 2008 6:33 PM

Here is the amended text of a comment I made 8/23/08 to the ACLU website:

I have regularly given Santa Cruz ACLU chapter membership dues at the yearly August meeting. Yet for several years I have not received a mailing or emailing with general meeting information for the chapter. I was told one year that the meetings were not being held regularly.

I am startled by the nomination and election without my knowledge of Ryan Coonerty for an American Civil Rights Union award. Mr. Coonerty has, with spurious reasons, limited by 33% the speaking time of the public at Santa Cruz City Council meetings and spoken rudely, ineffectively, and apparently without legal basis to people preparing to speak at some other public meetings. His actions as mayor leave a good deal to be desired.

I object to the Santa Cruz ACLU chapter's making this award decision without including its membership in it. I received no notice of the decision meeting or of the 8/24 meeting from the chapter and will not attend it because of an earlier important commitment.

In response to the Coonerty award, I totally support any non-violent, relatively respectful, legal or civilly disobedient civil rights complaint made by others at the meeting. I will withhold ACLU dues within California until the Santa Cruz chapter corrects its membership practices.

BECKY: The only thing you have is libel. I did NOT put a period after the word "naked." Your clever (but unethical) editing of my phrases completely changed the meaning. I pressed the "abuse" button, not because I disagreed, or even because you are wrong, but because you had purposely, and with malice misquoted me.

Don't YOU "edit" peoples posts when you answer them? Quite often YOU leave out entire sentences, portions of posts, etc.
I would think to many people this looks like an example of tactics you use.

Becky, you should be the last person on earth to complain about your words being taken out of context or misrepresented.

Couldn't that be considered libel? Do you have proof that that is a thought which goes through his head? Has he ever made that exact statement?
