$10,000,000?! Thats insane for a glorified garage!
Government buildings are ALWAYS the nicest and fanciest in town, occupying prime real estate.
It would be interesting for the fire department to quantify in dollars what their real contribution is to the community. Have they saved $10,000,000 in property?
Shana, What would be the estimated operating costs per year of their new station? What are the operating costs now?
It would be REALLY interesting to see the Sentinels reporters ask REAL questions instead of merely reciting the governments words.

So if Ben Lomond serves Felton, Bonny Doon and Zayante, why do we need those fire districts? Are you kidding, another $200/500K? Wrong year for this to go to a vote...

have to agree with Taxpayer, doesn't seem like anyone from the Sentinel asks questions. Where are the reports on the actual costs for a seismic retrofit ? On a typical commercial structure a seismic retrofit is less than half the cost of a new structure ! But the BLFD doesn't want that info made public ? This proposal comes from the same folks that bought the water rescue boat for the district ! Um, where exactly is lake Ben Lomond ?

The article is misleading. Boulder Creek has its own fire department, as do Felton and Zayante.$10,000,000 is ridiculous. Ben Lomond set up this bond because they fear that with recent Supervisor and LAFCO talk about combining fire districts they will be absorbed into another district rather than remaining independent.
It was pointed out to them that spending $12 million on Redwood Elementary was not sufficient to keep THAT facility open. Thus, this new expenditure is not a guarantee of continued operation. The argument fell on deaf ears. |

How much to just tear down the garage and build a new one while leaving the rest intact? Somehow I think its less than 10mil.
Just like a manager, find new ways to acquire and spend more money. Just to look more important. I've seen them park up and down Love Creek and out front. Not the greatest, but fully functional. How much more parking do they need? Meeting space? More like waste of space. We have the Park Hall, Highlands Park, Senior Center. How much more money do we need to flush away on 'meeting space'. Lets see if the Sentinel has interest in reporting than parrotting |

1 What is the current sesimic rating for the building? Anybody think about what 4-5 trucks are going to actually be able to do in the event of a 7.5 earthquake?? I was in the bay area for the 89 quake...it was pretty much neighbor helping neighbor for quick response items... It's a VOLUNTEER fire department, why do we need more beds? and more bathrooms?? We're not going with full time firemen... The BLFD is a GREAT bunch of people, who DO contribute a lot to the community..My Thanks to them for doing so...it really is appreciated by all of us who live here.....I just can't get on board a $10 million dollar bond for just BL...especially after getting hit with ..a Pool for the School, The Middle School Bond, The Library Bond..the existing fire district $, a county septic charge ( what in the heck is that for, I pay for having it pumped, not the county!) A Recession,$4/gal gas, and now asking for $10 million ??? Hel-lloooo!!!! can we pay off some of these bonds before we start adding anymore!!?? and that CERTAINLY seems like a lot of money to pay for some parking spaces!!! Nice to see where my property tax money is going!! hhhmmmmm..and what is the Return on Investment for that ?? Sell the boat !! |

From the Press Banner, regarding consolidation of the fire districts:
County officials want the Local Agency Formation Commission to seek “a consolidated, countywide approach” to fire protection as LAFCo weighs reorganization of fire agencies. ---------- County officials want the Local Agency Formation Commission to seek “a consolidated, countywide approach” to fire protection as LAFCo weighs reorganization of fire agencies. The message was contained in a letter sent by the board of supervisors after a unanimous vote April 8. LAFCo had asked for the county’s comments on a study of possible reorganization of five south-county fire agencies, but the board’s letter addresses the entire county. The County Fire Department, by far the biggest of the county’s 14 fire agencies, covers 286 square miles of rural land. “The service delivery needs of the entire Santa Cruz County community must be taken into account,” the supervisors said. Without suggesting a specific plan, their letter calls for: “… consistent delivery of countywide fire services.” Inclusion of “all rural and urban fire services, countywide.” “Appropriate geographical boundaries to maximize countywide service delivery.” Avoidance of service reductions and assurance of “sustainable improvement of operational efficiencies.” Phased implementation. “Without a consolidated, countywide approach, formation of new special districts taking County Fire service area would result in revenue reduction to County Fire,” the letter said.“This, in turn, creates an adverse impact on County Fire.… Ultimately such formation would also result in a service reduction somewhere else.” Bonny Doon has applied to LAFCo to form a fire protection district, and residents of Corralitos have talked about a similar plan. Both are now part of County Fire. County fire officials already are planning service reductions after a rate increase failed last summer. A county staff report attached to the supervisors’ letter pointedly lists the disparate annual tax revenue per capita for the various fire agencies, from County Fire’s $72.85 to Aptos/La Selva Fire Protection District’s $395.25. The average of the 11 agencies listed is $123.45. The letter will be included in a staff report to LAFCo on the south-county fire agencies when all agencies involved respond, according to LAFCo executive officer Pat McCormick. |

1 for all of those renters who think that this is not an issue that they have to worry about. Who do you think is going to pay for this once the landlord gets the bill. He will charge YOU !!!!! I always received a Accounts Payable aging to see what my cash flow was going to be so that I could plan for the future. This is hidden from the Taxpayers. Great questions being proposed by this site. |

The location is determined through the IP address block's assigned geographic location. So it depends upon what your service provider specified as the location for the IP address.
I would venture a guess that those "Santa Cruz, CA" locations are probably using Cruzio.com . |
