About time the council got something right. Now approve LaBahia and let's get on with the rebuilding. This area is a cash cow. Utilize it.

What a great improvement. Marriott is dependable for being clean, safe and having great service. I've always enjoyed my stays at Marriott, except for one time by SFO. There was a Christian Convention nearby with many families staying at Marriott, kids were running down the hall till 1am. The conventions attendees must have had a clause in their bible stating "do unto others, except in hotels".

Ever read travel reviews of Santa Cruz hotels? They are generally awful. I hope this changes things for the better.

A bunch of rich jerks from the hills talking about what life is like in Beach Flats - keep your petit burgeoise opinions to yourself. I've lived in Beach Flats for some time now, and I've never once had any trouble with the people who live there. Being poor doesn't mean you're lazy, dirty, unemployed, or violent. This is an attempt to drive a wedge in the Beach Flats community, fueling gentrification and kicking out the local people and businesses for BIG CORPORATE $$$$$$. It's sad to see that so many people in "progressive" Santa Cruz have such contempt and disgust for their own neighbors. If you want to act like that, go home to LA

Now if they continue on and mow down the rest of the flats...that would good too.

Obviously you live in the "low crime area" of the beach flats, meaning the police only come out there 14 times a night.

Level it. Start over.

wait a minute the only business' this hotel is driving out are other hotels owned by the same family. And anyway the only people that go near the boardwalk are "rich jerks (ie: tourists)from over the hill", BF residents, various criminal types and the occasional local looking for a glimpse of the old days.

In a way it is a good improvement. Tourist will have a nice room to stay in.
The article mentioned that supporters “hope” the new hotel will “help” clean the area. Hoping is not the SOLUTION to the problems in the area. The prostituting, drug dealing, gang activity and so forth will continue. The community needs to be proactive, especially with the criminal activity taking place.
Many of the people engaged in criminal activities rent the neighborhood hotels to do their “things” and hide out from the police. What makes people think that criminals will not rent a room from the Marriott, causing the problem to continue. So the area will still not be cleaned up!

Well that's funny - I say the same thing about upper-middle-class neighborhoods full of burgeoise drones who are locked in their houses watching mind-control television by 9 o'clock. The reason the police put so much pressure on Beach Flats is because people are DOING THINGS there - partying together and fighting with each other and arguing and loving and talking and LIVING. All the things you don't do sitting in front of your screens.

It's you who is the problem, not us. It's the people who want to turn Amerika into one big giant coast to coast strip mall where everyone has an 8pm police curfew and there's a Wal-Mart every 10 blocks. At least in Beach Flats people are too poor to cultivate your holier-than-thou attitude problem, and too poor to waste all their time buying cheap Chinese plastic with more cheap Chinese plastic, too poor to be imprisoned in a 20,000 sqft house from dusk till dawn.

Did you know that the entire Beach Flats area is covered with SCPD surveillance cameras? Barson, Ocean, the Boardwalk, etc. Several of the cases at the DA's office have been made based on footage from those cameras.
If big business comes in there and decimates some of the crime-ridden areas of BF, who the hell is going to complain? Men who enjoy hookers and blow? Yeah, let's put their needs above the safety of the general community.

Oh my gosh.

A. I don't start watching mind-control TV until 10pm, thank you very much. And the reason I can watch said TV is because I CAN AFFORD CABLE.

B. The rest of the county does plenty of "arguing and loving and talking and LIVING." We just don't do it with a meth pipe in one hand and a switchblade in the other in the middle of the street at 1am in a drunken stupor while yelling at our homegirls in Spanish, comprendes?

C. We don't have an 8pm police curfew anyplace in this state that I'm aware of. State your facts.

D. You take pride in being too poor to live in a nice house and own nice things? And you think other people are the problem?? Hey, enjoy your crackhouse decor and your 40. See you at the soup kitchen.(I'll be the one serving your idiot a-s-s.)

Way to go city council! Finally some good news for Santa Cruz business. Thank you very much.

Hopefully the new Courtyard will attract other hotel chains, businesses, etc and we will be able to clean up the Beach Flats area. That is prime real estate, how many times have we all heard from visitors of what a waste it is down there.

Whew! Who pissed in your corn flakes this morning.

Those of us with the money to actually contribute to this economy know better than to buy that cheap Chinese plastic crap. It is the folks that shop at Walmart/Target/Kmart buying all that cheap crap.(and will be back to buy more once it breaks)

Then there is the TV comment. Most of us with an education level above the 3rd grade KNOW not to spend their time in front of the boob tube and because we actually work for a living (instead of taking welfare handouts), we have enough time and money to go out and do things besides sit around the idiot box.

Jeez get over yourself...

This is a good sign for Santa Cruz. Some people with bitch about anything.
