Perhaps if her last name had been Chavez, she would have gotten the helicopter ride to a Trauma Center.

To the sister of this man who killed our family member who posted a comment here a couple weeks ago saying she was sorry for what her brother did to Deana: I hope you will be willing to do whatever you can to help our family see that justice is served. It will not bring Deana back, of course, but it certainly is one small gesture to help our family heal.

Domestic Violence IS A CRIME!!! You should be found guilty. My sister had the chance to live. I have known Richard Chavez for 11 yrs. He knows what he did was wrong and that she had a chance. You cannot sit there and watch someone die and not be guilty. Children have lost their mother, because he was a COWARD!! Dazed by what he did- I think not! Scared to face the TRUTH- ALL GUILTY PEOPLE ARE!

Hey Family,
Ignore the people that say stupid things, they have nothing better to do than look for places to comment. If it had been one of thier cousins or mother or sister, it would be a different story. Just wish them well and pray that God would get them a job or something more productive to do. I am proud that you guys don't hold this against that mans family, they had nothing to do with it. You Rock!

Why doesn't he just plead guilty - and not waste tax payers money. Stupid man.

To the families involved, I am sorry for the stupidity and insensitivity of some of the posters here. Some of the assumed adults around here don't quite have all of their wits about them if you know what I mean. I can assure you that the vast majority of people hearing this story are outraged that this happened and care deeply about the victim and everyone that has been impacted by this.

The kids have in foster care for 18 months? I missed that detail before. The courts don't take away your kids just because they don't have anything better to do. He might actually get off.

The woman had a drinking problem, she had just gotten out of rehab and was workingv towards getting her kids back. Sadly, she may have moved in with this guy thinking it would speed up her family reunion. Besides, no one deerve to be beaten to death with a flashlight, or anything else. The kids visited frequently, they loved thier mom.:et's mourn the woman's passing, feel sad this man has thrown away his life by taking anothers and hope the children find a stable home center to continue with thier lives.

All I have to say is this: How the heQQ do you beat someone to death, sit and watch them die, and decide to call yourself innocent? Seriously!?! Talk about insult to injury. I'm disgusted... So sorry to those who remain without her.

It's pretty much standard procedure to plead innocent in the early going. Most or all judges will not accept early guilty pleas. This will take a long time to go through the courts. Probably a year or more.

Let's not let the Sentinel forget about this crime like it does so many others. Come summer and fall, keep posting on this...

Because, even though the guy probbly killed the woman, the charges still have to be setermined, from negligence, manslaughter and varying degrees of murder. The county attorney will go for the most severe charges, the defense attorney for nothing. On a good day, justice will be served with a decision somewhere between those 2 perimers. And yes, this is way we do things in a democracy. Do you keep up with the almost daily news of exeronerations (two, in Con. this wekk). No, not implying that is the case here, but everyone is entitled to thier day in court.

Sorry to the family of the girl, however, rest easy this monster will more than likely get off scott free. I sat on a murder trial here in 1988 the man showed us how he strangled her the pictures were horrid and he got off, why, because the judge said so. I thought the jury determined this but nooooooooooo, the judge. He first appeared rather "sane" walked okay, and as the days' went by he first came in with a cane for a few days, then a walker and before the trial was over he was in a wheelchair. Poor man, not strong enough, bull, he was drunk and very strong when he strangled this small lady to death. Our system stinks and nothing is being done about it, never worry, if you commit a crime you will proably get off free. Enough said.

It is just sad that a life was taken for no particular reason. When you are that upset, you leave the situation and come back when you are calmer. I do that with my kids. I walk away and come back in 5 minutes. That 5 minutes makes all the difference. To the family, I am so sorry about your loss. She didn't deserve to die so violently. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you.

this sounds like someting you got off a teabag site. would like to know particulars of the case, even the case, itself. Though sometimes, there are mistakes, on both sides. We have a messy and imperfect system, do you suggest anything better?

Where is "here" and tell us the name of the perpetrator, please. I agree with the previous poster: was this written for your convenient use by a teabag-bot?

I notice your commment and mine were met with silence from our teabag spewer. Just like when they start spouting off "cases" showing the "need" for "tort" reform.
