at about 3:05pm today, northbound 1 at mission and Chesnut, I saw a bunch of CHP and Sheriffs cars heading north up Mission with full sirens and lights. wasnt anything I could see on the CHP traffic status pages.

anyone got a clue what this was about?

I think it was the cops going to the scene of the accident I spoke of above. Not sure though, but the traffic was HORRIFIC, I assume there were several accidents. It took me an hour to get from Ocean Street to Aptos, and that was on back streets, I didn't even bother with Highway 1.

i had to drive to aptos today, left the downtown s'cruz area at about 3:30 and go to aptos (near safeway) a little after 4pm. was heavy traffic but we rarely full stopped, mostly just puttzed along at 20-30mph.

the 4-5 cop cars I saw were heading NORTH on Mission, towards the westside, which is away from everything you mentioned

This was the worst week for traffic I have seen in a long time. Guess I didn't miss the UCSC students and all the support personnel...

This accident was actually on NORTHbound 17. Of course all the looky-loos in the southbound lanes slowed that side as well.(Is there even any place on the southbound side where you could go over an embankment?)

I was in that traffic jam on 17 yesterday afternoon, going north. There was a sign near Scotts Valley saying that there had been an accident near the summit. I got to the top after 25 minutes in the jam and didn't see anything. There was one CHP car in one of those dirt lots on the side of the road with a couple of other cars. I didn't see any evidence of an accident.

Students moving in this weekend, sentinel triathalon, and super warm weather are the perfect ingredients for lots of people unfamiliar with the area driving around.

Hey everybody,

Here's the drift. This is a secret Sentinel story contest. They provide the headline and we write the story. A new twist in pseudo-journalism. We can get up to all kinds of mischief. The winner gets to replace Don Miller. Heck, my cat could do that!

A doctor traveling by car collides with an attorney who happens to be driving in the opposite direction. The attorney, seeing that the doctor is a bit shaken up, helps him from the car and offers him a drink of Scotch from his hip flask. The doctor accepts, took a long drink and hands the flask back to the attorney, who closes it and puts it away. "Aren't you going to have a drink yourself?" asks the doctor.
The attorney replies, "Sure, as soon as the police leave."

A car speeding down the highway lost control, went through a guard rail, rolled down a cliff, bounced off a tree, landed upside down and finally stopped, wheels spinning in the air, smoke and steam pouring out from under the hood.
A passing motorist, who witnessed the entire accident, helps the miraculously unharmed driver out of the wreck. "Good Lord Mister, he gasps, are you drunk?"
"Of course!," says the man, brushing the dirt from his suit. "What the hell do you think I am? A stunt driver or something?"
