Here's another example of the jealousy that exists against PCS. How stupid to make it more difficult for the best school in America to continue to exist. The county is cutting off it's nose to spite it's face.

Instead of running away from PCS, Santa Cruz public schools ought to look at what PCS is doing to make it the #1 school in the nation.

Finally! SCCS did their homework. They got an actual appraisal of my kids elementary school and found that PCS success has been subsidized for five years by the rest of the students in Santa Cruz.
Kudos to the board for taking on the "elite" parents and telling them they need to pay their fair share. Remeber, those PCS kids learned to read and do math in the same elementary schools as my kids. And my kids AP scores are just as high as theirs.

I can't help but wonder what SCCS plans for the campus are if and when PCS vacates. Is there some competitive bid for the property or will the current rent simply become a forgone opportunity for the district?
I also think it's important to remember that the students of PCS, and those enrolled in every other charter school that is hosted by districts throughout the county, are members of the public school community.
One of the important principles surrounding charter school development is recognizing that education is not a one size fits all proposition and that providing students with a range of educational options is simply another form of healthy diversity. To my mind, the charter movement is about keeping public schools pubic and not the zero sum game that a voucher program, for example, might be.

Just because these parents wanted a better school for their children - they're elitist? Give me a break. They are no different than most parents in this area. Instead of SCCS trying to force PCS "out of business" (which they won't BTW), SCCS should look at why this school WORKS! Gee, PCS is able to work within their budget - why can't SCCS. And please, don't tell me its 'cause people pay to attend PSC. They DON'T - its voluntary. Parents DO need to donate time to work at the school....but then again, what school wouldn't benefit from more parent involvement from time to time. And for the record... my child does not attend PCS.

Living outside the city, I don't have a dog in this fight. I understand SCCS wanting to get as much as they can for the property; I understand PCS wanting to control their costs
It's hard for me to understand what Santa Cruz City Schools (SCCS)is thinking, unless this is another attempt to undermine PCS, or they are trying to make up a budget shortfall off PCS. Far from SCCS subsidizing PCS, the situation looks quite the opposite.
If SCCS is not going to sell the property, then what can an appraisal show, other than what rent might be obtained from another tenant with an intended use compatible with the property and neighborhood?
No lease money leaves SCCS worse off financially than getting less for the lease than they'd like.

If the School District can't collect as much rent as PCS would have paid, I hope the petty, jealous board members come up with difference out of their own pockets.

Dear parents of kids in the SCCS,
Your district just threw away $275,000 a year in rent, just as we head deeper into a long funding crisis. I guess they have some other entity lined up to pay the higher rent? Just remember this the next time the SCCS asks you to pay for something.

Typical Santa Cruz mentality.
Destroy those who are committed to excellence in defense of selfishness, greed and mediocrity.

The solution is really quite simple: Put PCS in charge of running all of Santa Cruz county high schools. Then we will be able to see if PCS is the "best high school in the country" or whether its achievement is simply an artifact of a self-serving admissions policy.
I think the latter, but would be absolutely delighted to be proven wrong.

I look forward to seeing how much more SCCS gets in rent from the next tenant. They DO have a new tenant lined up, right? Perhaps one of the many high tech companies in Santa Cruz will snatch up one of the rare empty buildings on the West Side... </sarcasm>

There are so many companies willing to pay top dollar in this HOT market. </sarcasm>

Everyone on this post seems to be missing what's really going on here. Read the last sentence:
"Hawthorne said the district has received several inquires from other groups about renting the site, though she declined to offer specifics. She said the district would not sell the property."
This is hogwash. They will drive PCS out so that they can turnaround and SELL, not rent the property to a developer who will turn this prime, near oceanfront, Westside land into a subdivision of multimillion dollar homes and possibly commercial development as well. This is the the district's lottery ticket out of the state budget crunch. Do not believe Hawthorne, just because she tells the Sentinel they will not sell the property does not mean she is bound to this proclamation. She probably already has several lucrative offers.
