Bad idea!! I agree with Joni Arends, CCNS. It was the first thing that came to my mind too, when Los Alamos(and Rio Arriba) County was mentioned. There is no way they can 'guarantee' that waste will be free of harmful pollutants; be it radiation, heavy metals or toxic chemicals. Too many of them, too many unknowns, and inadequate monitoring. We already know that from documented ground and surface water contamination, courtesy of LANL. You know what they say about humans being the only species that intentionally foul their own nest. This would be a classic case in the worst possible sense.

I'd like to hear State Secretary Ron Curry of the Environment Dept. weigh in on this proposal, even if he is not directly involved.

Besides, if the increased volume of garbage will reduce the 'life-span' of our own county landfills, then why accept trash from other counties just to supposedly help reduce THEIR carbon footprint or make a few bucks? Instead, work up a schedule of periodic increases in tipping fees to Santa Fe City/County residents to cover the increased operating costs over the next 10 years. PLEASE~ for the safety, health and peace of mind of your citizens, forget about becoming a garbage-broker!

As if the trash of Doc M and the rest of Santa Fe residents is "clean"? Be realistic...if you are concerned about the potential for contamination from a landfill, then we better close this one and export our toxic soup somewhere else!
And if its plutonium we are so worried about, WE better move. Do not forget that we are both down stream hydraulically and downwind atmospherically...if you're worried about being irradiated, sorry you already are!
To the the long term capacity question? Lets take their trash and their money and let the landfill develop more diversion opportunities for Santa Feans, as its clear the City and County are incapable.

Sounds like a bad deal for Santa Fe County.
I guess it`s all about the money.
Follow the money, not the trash.
