Seems the gas co could have anticipated this. Cold snap was predicted by Albq wx folks for 5 days in advance. Im sure they blame it on somebody else ( gov. regs?) Bottom line we are all cold and nobody in town has electric heaters for sale. BOOOOO the gas co

"The New Mexico Gas Company is asking residents to remain in their homes if they can and if they have safe alternative sources of heat to keep warm, such as electric heaters, wood or pellet stoves, and electric blankets, according to an update on its website."

That's all fine if there were no random "electrical" blackouts...someone needs to hang for this f**k up!

It's regrettable that the town doesn't have a section on their official web-site for people to contact in situations like this.

Yes this was preventable, good gas companies plan for this type of situation. Natural gas is usually on hand for peak shaving purposes. This state is a huge producer of natural gas, shame that a local distributor could not keep up with demand.

They can't prepare for emergencies, and deliver what we pay for, but if we paid our bills like they deliver gas there would be hell to pay!

Boy if some heads don't roll over this. A class action law suit is in order for this. We pay for the service when we need it most, they cut it off. So i'll just pay my bill when i get around to it. No warning from anyone in Silver, how stupid is this. So much for our local government.

El Paso residents are also suffering from blackouts, water freezing, and no natural gas. We are never prepared for anything!

New Mexico has plenty of natural gas and shouldn't have to import it from Texas. New Mexico Environmental Department makes it nearly impossible to extract gas and oil in New Mexico, so companies go to other states with more consistent, predictable regulations and enforcement.

We need gas transmission compressors with backup generators and we need power sources that are geared to deal with extremely cold weather (not just extremely hot weather). But redundant systems that make everybody safer cost more money, and businesses are about making a profit, not keeping you safe.

This is corner-cutting on somebody's part. But if anyone suggests more regulation, they get called a socialist.

Can't have it both ways, people.

We are hitting RECORD LOWS in temperature right now. The people blaming El Paso Electric and politicians need to realize that the power and natural gas shortfalls are being distributed among ALL of the areas served to make sure nobody is without utilities for extended periods.

Some of you might blame the utility providers and politicians if your home collapsed in an earthquake... or maybe GWB...

We DO need to upgrade our power system including use of solar and wind power.

As far as our high electric rates are concerned, that is regulated by the PRC and negotiated between EPEC and the State of New Mexico PRC.

The sheer volume of gas running through the lines can restrict the flow. Have you ever run a propane gas grill or weed burner at full blast for an extended period? The regulator starts to freeze up restricting the flow of gas. Additionally, envision taking a shower when "the better half" just flushed the toilet, while doing laundry and dishes. Do you have "normal" water pressure? I DOUBT IT. The excessive demand for natural gas in volume could be minimizing their ability to provide it.

It's an overloaded grid and overloaded gas supply at the moment. Extreme weather conditions, whether hot or cold contribute to the problem. Texas is so bad off that they are buying electricity from Mexico. This isn't an EPEC problem so much as it is a NATIONAL problem.

There is no doubt we NEED better infrastructure. Just be grateful you aren't living in a cave in the middle east.

By the way, I do not work for EPEC, any gas provider and am not a politician.

I simply have "An Objective Opinion" which is my moniker on most posts.

Great Point! Finally somebody who knows what we need. Increase taxes, decrease dividends. Spend money on infrastructure.
In 1962 we had the historical low of -10F. I cannot find any reports of blackouts or problems with power. Why now? profits, I think.
Folks, this is a serious problem. Buy peanut butter. Get a water and heat supply.
It's really a catch 22. Cold causes electric to go down, then electric goes down and causes gas to go down which caused electric to go down more. The whole thing could crash. good luck.
Drive to Arizona or Mexico. Buy Peanut butter and extra water.
EPEC you sk.
