What?!?!? I would like to hear some quotes from the family of the victim. I realize he may not have been completely innocent but FOUR times in the back?!?!? I don't need to shoot someone four times in the back in any case I can think of.

he wasnt in a gang yet he was caring a gun hmmmmm sounds like he was looking for trouble...and in the back huh sounds like he was being attacked (rolling my eyes) but that is why there is so much crime because no one ever really pays why should he get to enjoy his life when the guy will never get to...

I really wish the reporters could get the story straight.. Not that it makes a difference but I thought it was three times in the back and twice from the front.. Kellen wasn't the cream of the pot anyhow, he was a distructable person who pushed his bulliness around and did in fact cause innocent family pain and suffering as well.. We may think that Mr. Chavez is a bad person but maybe we need to hear his side of the story.. Afterall the media does portray things to be a lil worst than it really is..

It looks to us that no one followed the case to know the details and the circumstances that surround the incident that night. The last time we checked its our god given right to bear arms and defend ourselves especially when a drunk, meth addicted, self destructive bully, such as Mr. Kellen Lucero pulls out a tire iron at an innocent person in the middle of the night and starts shouting "I'm going to kill you!", for no reason at all!! Any person in their right mind will automatically defend themselves against a person like that. I know we would. Thank god we keep a gun near us because we all know their are crazy people like Mr. Lucero in this town who frankly don't care about the well being of others.

Mr Lucero came from a family with a background. You all want to know what type of family Mr Lucero came from I suggest you review his family history and records @ http://www.nmcourts.com look for yourself. I think a majority of the family is cookoo and not centered at all. Its sad to know that Mr Lucero is known for only the bad things he has done. I would like to see someone comment something honest and respectful about Mr Lucero since everyone only knew him to be a mean and disturbing person. This guy is also know for attacking the elderly in our community with a tire iron just like he attacked Andrew Chavez.. Doesn't that make you wonder?? HMMMMMMMMMMM!!

I'm glad that Mr. chavez will get to start a life for himself. It was self-defense in my opnion and I don't believe that he should have ever been incarcerated from the beginning..... If the lucero guy would have came at me like he did to the Chavez kid, I would have shot him too no questions asked.

The DA shouldn't get butt hurt because he couldn't make an innocent man go back to jail. LIVE WITH IT AND DEAL WITH IT.....HES A FREE MAN!

Hopefully everyone will learn from it.....

Why? The family of the "victim" were not witnesses to the shooting, therefore what they have to say about the shooting is IRRELEVANT.

The first shot to the front of the decedent was enough to kill, the other shots were simply the mutilation of a corpse, duh.

No, it sounds like the guy was excercising his federal second amendment right to bear arms and possibly his state constitutional right to do the same...not just "caring" for a gun. Not "caring" for a gun would be negligence on behalf of the gun owner.

judgement

Albuquerque, NM

#14 Aug 29, 2008
i think that everyone should not be judged by how they look or dress i mean seriously... the way people dress is how they want... thats them... like andrew chavez by just looking at him u assume he's a gang member just by how baggy his pants are or how short his hair is... i mean come on get real people... andrew was attacked when he was walking home late at night.. ya he had a gun but that dont mean anything... he was deffending himself when lucero came up assuming he was a gang member and hit him with a bar for the tires... how childish man like really... he wanted to pick a fight with an innocent man hust by how he was dressed and the way he looked... he should not have used any weapon and maybe he'd still be alive... but dont be putting this all on andrew he is the most brightest, and smartest man y will meet... dont be dissing on him because he was deffending himself... he had the right to do that... is you were in the same situation as andrew was i know you would've done the same thing... so dont be putting all this on him when it was luceros fault for miss-judging an innocent person...

All of you just keep assuming that Chavez was in the right and Lucero wasn't. But let's really look at this. Do you honestly think that it is necessary to shoot someone 5 times in "self-defense"? I don't think so. This kid should have run and if he felt the need to shoot his gun he could have shot into the air or aimed at a less fatal place like the leg or foot. To continuously shoot someone is rediculous, especially in the back at close range. The location where the murder occured has houses all around and he could have gone pounding on someones' door and call for help. And forget about Chavez carrying a gun because of his rights as an American-we are not living in the days of the wild west. I wonder if he had a permit to carry a weapon anyway. Chavez should have been sent to prison to rot.

I am Kellen's cousin. First of all, Kellen was a good guy. I reminisce on the days when we were kids and we would play together and ride bikes. Sure, he had a troubled life. My life wasn't so perfect either. However, I do know Kellen, and I know he wouldn't have EVER asked Chavez if he was in a gang because Kellen wasn't even in a gang. He was working at a local Silver City plumbing place trying to get his life in order. Kellen wasn't on meth nor did he have a tire iron in his hand (he had one in his truck) the night of the murder. I also agree with Keep Assuming's words of wisdom, "Do you honestly think that it is necessary to shoot someone 5 times in "self-defense"? I don't think so. This kid (Chavez) should have run and if he felt the need to shoot his gun he could have shot into the air or aimed at a less fatal place like the leg or foot. To continuously shoot someone is rediculous, especially in the back at close range. And forget about Chavez carrying a gun because of his rights as an American-we are not living in the days of the wild west. I wonder if he had a permit to carry a weapon anyway. Chavez should have been sent to prison to ROT." I put the emphasis on rot because Chavez was alive to tell his side of LIES aka "self-defense". Too bad Kellen was shot in the heart and four times in the back when he was trying to run to his truck to escape & now he's DEAD so he can't tell us the truth about what REALLY happened. And by the way, Andrew Chavez is the meth addict. Maybe that's why he didn't realize that Kellen didn't have a weapon & proceeded to shoot him anyway even as Kellen tried to escape. So now that Chavez is "free", I only wish that Silver City Officials would look into the gun Chavez used to see if he had a permit to carry it or a concealed carrying license to have it. I heard that Chavez's dad gave him the gun, so it kinda sounds like he pre-meditated the murder. I believe Chavez should be tried for carrying a firearm without a license because it is a felony. Chavez is not a very smart guy.
I would also like to add that I loved (and still do) Kellen very much along with the rest of his family. They may not be perfect, but they are caring and loving. I am proud to be part of their family.

Well, Andrew isn't going to ROT in a cell like you want him to because he has a chance at life. THe only one who IS "ROTTING" (with emphasis) away right now is Kellen, but out of his own negligence! It's obvious YOU weren't following the case, because he had the tire iron with him not in the truck and he also had a GUN, a KNIFE, a CHAIN, and DRUGS. What the hell was he planning to do with those? Good thing Andrew didn't wait around to wonder about it! The one who should have been sent away to prison was Kellen for all the crimes he committed in his past and maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't have been out looking for someone to jump in the middle of the night like a psycho, drug addicted drunk!!!!!!!! TOO BAD WE CAN'T HEAR KElLEN'S SIDE OF THE STORY, but then again he was known for being a liar too so who knows what he would have come up with........
