If any caucasians wish to see the problem of illegal aliens, drive through this section of San Jose "Story Rd. and King Rd". Gang activity is everywhere taggings (graffiti) are all over, garbage, broken glass, this section of San Jose appears much like East L.A. so as far as our police chief saying that he would rather continue to use the sanctuary city approach, and have illegals feeling so comfortable they will hypothetically report criminal activity, it doesn't seem to be working, the criminal activity is getting worse Murders. when will San Jose start getting honest with the residence.

I can not believe you say this "who come here for an honest living" where they are from would be an honest living being here illegally creates a crime so honest living is absurd do you think about the virtue of "honesty", it can be achieved after doing something wrong and than be corrected but while you are dishonest there is no honesty, or honest, try to consider that please.

To Whom It May Concern:

The Mercury News should have checked the name of the shopping center before posting this article. It mistakenly claims that the shooting happened at the Tropicana Shopping Center. However, the shooting occurred at Mi Pueblo shopping center located on the opposite corner of Story and King Roads.

I had always assumed that the Merc prided itself on doing its research before posting articles, especially since an article such as this can negatively impact the public image of a shopping center and it's landlords and business owners. Shame on the Merc for not doing its due diligence before smearing a shopping center's good name. Already the article has been picked up by the Associated Press and read by who knows how many online and hard copy readers.

The tenants, business owners and landlords at Tropicana Shopping Center have spent millions to fix up the shopping center without public subsidy and now have the unforunate experience of seeing their hard work and good names threatened because of the Merc's failure to properly research it's facts before running an article.

We demand a formal front page retraction in the Merc.

Sincerely,
Jennie Koski

I did some more checking and found out the shooting actually happened at the Plaza de San Jose shopping center across from us, which was built using RDA subsidies. While the two are literally across the street from each other, it's a matter of pride and image for those of us that work at Tropicana. As an example, if your neighbor murdered someone but a largely publicized newspaper like the Merc misstated that you were the murderer, the negative publicity would be centered at you, not so much your neighbor and the neighborhood. Tropicana is known by name by those living in this neighborhood and those that come here from other cities. So for us to be associated with shootings and murders when the owners, tenants and landlords have worked so hard to clean up Tropicana (some having been here for 20-30 years) and give it a better, newer, safer image, you can bet it makes a difference to us. Still, thank you for your opinion.
