5/22: Letters to the Editor

There are 66 comments on the Orlando Sentinel story from May 22, 2009, titled 5/22: Letters to the Editor. In it, Orlando Sentinel reports that:

Is the word "terrorist" so terrifying to Americans that our sense of morality and our minds close down whenever we hear it? One is reminded of the emotional heat that once was stirred by the word "communist." Fear can eat a nation's foundations away.

...."With that being said, I ask: Who in their right mind would want to work without a contract? Union representation gives the average worker the right to bargain for fair working conditions and wages. Many business executives have a contract. Workers — not a corporate business executive — should have the right to decide what is in their best interests"...

OH REALLY??? I don't remember, during the time that I was in the local carpenters union, ever being allowed to negotiate my own contract. I had to accept whatever the UNION decided was appropriate, whether I agreed with it or not. And it was because of the union deciding to accept layoffs instead of hour cuts that I lost my job. So, don't try to tell ME that unions are universally beneficial to the workers. It was also my experience that, where I worked, the worst slackers were the most senior unionmembers in the shop.

Oh, I would have LOVED to have been able to negotiate my own contract.

As far as having the RIGHT to decide what's in your best interests, sure I agree, but since people rarely know the difference between what's truly in their best interests and what they simply WANT, the result is usually a battle and not a negotiation. You saw it with Eastern Airlines, ten or twelve years ago... the union DEMANDED more money, the airline people said that they didn't have it, even offered up the books to prove it, said that if they DID give more, that they'd have to shut down, and STILL the union wouldn't be denied.

Has anyone flown Eastern lately???

Stupid unions.

He didn't forget at all. He just has values he's willing to live by, and if necessary die by.

Do you?

Will-Add your name to long list of enemy
sympathizers that blame America for causing the terrorists to strike on 9-11.The Presidents plane flying over over NYC a few weeks ago for a photo shoot sent thousands of people fleeing out of high rise buildings into the streets. Then the plan to bomb churches and shoot down a military plane in New York this week.I am sure if you had lived when Pearl Harbor was bombed you would have been writing a letter how cruel we were to pull a sneak attack on Tokyo soon after Pearl was hit. This country has not lost its way as you claim.

Perfectly said. Unions serve no purpose in today's world as employers have the risk of facing lawsuits if they do anything remotely non-compliant. All unions do is make it impossible for businesses to make capital, IE: GM & Chrysler. It costs them nearly 4 times as much to build a vehicle as it does any foreign car company. God himself couldn't make either of them a profitable business while satisfying the union's demands.

That's a start Mr. Park. On one hand, a little fear is healthy; it keeps you alert and alive. A LOT of fear, however, was the Cheney Administration MO. They gave us the fear meter: red, yellow, orange. We have a terrorist on the loose (one that we let escape so we would have a common enemy). We have a ticking time bomb (TV) torture scenario. We have Dick "Obama is not keeping us safe" Cheney running his mouth how he kept us safe, but apparently forgets that he didn't. And you have him citing 9/11 about 20 or 30 times (remember the terrible attack) while speaking at the American Enterprise Institute.
There has been a deliberate and prolonged program to inculcated you and America with fear. It is a Machiavellian tool to keep you and compliant and distracted from the Neocon warprofiteering truth.
Is it any wonder that we have become a nation of paranoid patsys?
What the Neocons have underestimated is the power of technology. With it, we (citizens) are able to quickly see the truth and respond to it. That's why the '06 and '08 and special elections so totally repudiated the twisted self-serving "spin" that came from the Cheney Administration for 8 years.

"over built" - great letter, don't think local government will ever learn. perhaps residents who loose homes to flooding should bring lawsuits against builders and those who issue permits. maybe then bulldoze and build will be more carefully thought out.

Well-composed letter Will Park. I would like to respond.

First, your letter indicates that those with a different opinion are juvenile in thought (9-foot phantoms), or terrified of a word (minds that close down when we hear THE word). You also believe that others are delusional (fictive nightmares from reality and *perceived* enemies). No, we did not perceive the attacks on our country nor do we wonder who they were, nor are we wrong in believing that they still wish us harm.

You also suggest that those of us who believe that we are a nation of laws, a Constitutional Republic, don't believe that we are a democracy. Well, you ARE right on that last one.

Your opposition believes that we have a real enemy who wishes us dead only because we are Americans, not that we have somehow made them mad. We expect our leaders to protect the nation against such aggressors. Moreover, we understand that enemy combatants are enemies of war and not domestic criminals subject to our criminal courts. We also understand that if we attempt to try them in a domestic court that they and their attorneys will eat up vast resources through the manipulation of our legal system. Do you not think they will intentionally attempt to grind up our court system? Moreover, if our enemies tried to prosecute our soldiers in their civilian courts, we would cry, no...scream foul!

We (those of differing values) are also decent and honest, but we believe that "fair play" is not found on a battlefield. The battlefield is not, "Bang! You're dead! Hey! No fair, I shot you first!"

Think about this Mr. Park. Our survival as a great constitutional republic depends on it!

you should be ashamed to call yourself a American Will in no way is helping the enemy in truth Will is showing more courage and bravery than a simple minded fool like you has ever shown. We put your party out for this type of labeling anyone who does not agree with you. Maybbe you should quit calling others names and look in the mirror you might learn something.

Blaming Unions for Eastern is stupid.

The airline industry was built over decades...and was suddenly deregulated overnight.

This forced airlines to change their entire way of doing business. The entire business model changed.

Big airlines, those profitable in the earlier system often had long term contract (planes contracts, air routes and air rights, labor contracts etc). All of this needed to be switched.

And, let's be fair, the mindset of the airline industry - the business leaders - needed to change.(They, to this DAY, are still fighting the new model)

All the major airlines ran into trouble: Eastern, Pan Am, Continental, America West Airlines, TWA. They either went bankrupt or went completely out of business.

Meanwhile Southwest Airlines is profitable (and they have excellent relations with the unions).

Perhaps you are completely correct in what you say. I don't know about ALL of that.

But I do know that it's stupid to demand more money in the face of proof that more money cannot be given without resulting in the sure collapse of the business. Maybe they would have folded anyway, as stated, I don't know.

The unions certainly didn't help things to stay afloat.
