ATHENS, Ga.-- Athens-Clarke County Police have arrested the mother of a newborn baby boy killed Thursday in Athens. According to Assistant Chief of Police Fred Stephens, 21-year-old Cassandra Elyse Norwood was charged with murder and booked into the Athens-Clarke County jail Friday morning. They issued the arrest warrant Thursday night after interviews with family members.
The 911 call came in around 1 p.m. Thursday from the 170 block of Great Oak Drive in East Athens. The infant's body was discovered bearing possible stab wounds and cuts hours after being born.
Other family members were home at the time, but no one else was hurt. Police are looking for the father of the child.
Two children, 5 and 6, who had been removed from their mother because of abuse and neglect were beaten, burned and bitten last month by their grandmother, who had been appointed their guardian, authorities said.
Goldine Williams, 47, of the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue, was ordered held on $200,000 today on charges of aggravated battery to a child.
Williams hit the boy, 6, with a plastic sword cover from his Halloween costume, beat him with an extension cord and burned him with a hair iron all over his body, according to a police report.
She also burned her granddaughter, 5, and bit and scratched her, according to the report.
The children told police they were forced to eat cat food, the report said.
KIRKWOOD, Mo.(KMOV) A Kirkwood man is accused of hitting his granddaughter in the head with a bat and punching another granddaughter in the face because his house was dirty when he arrived home.
Cecil Jones, 61, was charged Monday with second-degree assault and third-degree assault.
According to police, Jones got upset after he arrived home in the 300 block of Alsobrook and found a messy house.
Kirkwood police said he walked up to his granddaughter and punched her in the face, giving her a bloody and swollen lip.
Authorities said he assaulted another granddaughter with his hands in her bedroom. He then grabbed a bat and hit her in the head, which swelled up.
Jones was arrested and taken into custody. His bail was set at $25,000.
