It appears that there were more problems for kids with special needs than with the general student body. Unfortunately these kids are the ones that need the stability and support of not being forgotten. If your child has special needs, then you were lucky to have your child picked up to go to school or brought home again. My wife had to pick up our son after his bus never showed up at school to bring him home. They weren't able to contact the bus or the bus driver. Now it is looking like the driver actually starts next week.

Since then I've been trying to reach someone in the transportation department. They've either not had any ideas or told me someone would call me back. That was 2 1/2 hours ago now and we're not sure if our son has a bus to or from school tomorrow. Sounds like more than small problems if the phones were "ringing off the hook".

KTVX did a story last week where the district claimed it was bending over backwards to find special ed students who required transportation ... that it was their legal obligation to provide continuity of service.
You're lucky; my girls - the district is trying to say they have to restart the evaluation process from square one and aren't even supporting the current placement. In fact, their first statement to our faces was that they were going to fight it.

It would be, "students who" not "students that."
Journalists should know the difference. But, it's Utah - so, what would one expect?

Oh I would love to talk to other Canyons families that are having problems. They tried a bunch of bologna with our 2 special needs kids including trying to re-write their IEP's before school even started. They now claim they were just giving us the option but really it would have been in their best interest ($$$$) to do so. They've now given us fits in our first IEP meeting. Please contact me - I want to talk (mebbyw@msn.com).

Waabulo,
We have a current placement and invoked 'stay put' more than ten days before the school year started. We waved the need for a 3 year evaluation, but offered a compromise of have an autism specific organization do the evaluation as long as both parties agreed to abide by their recommendation. Canyons, under IDEA are the ones who have to go to due process to justify their position. On the last day of JSD's obligations, we enrolled in a nationally resapected online/correspondence program JSD had been saying they were committed to provide. They reimbursed us. No attorneys; no due process.
