Is it true that if someone has a friend working at the telephone co. they can find out for you who posts a thread on topix? I have heard this and doubt it to be true, but what is even more interesting, I posted this topic a couple days ago, and now when I click on it, the post wont even open up.Why is that? I am not posting an accusation, I am just simply saying I heard this, and asking if it is possible.

When that telephone worker does that, then they can kiss their job goodbye. There is such a thing called the privacy act.Telephone workers has no business snooping into other peoples business. The only way to get an ISP is by a court order. If I ever find out that a telephone worker give out my info I would sue them.

An internet service provider (ISP) normally does keep logs of one's online activity. I mean think about it, how else do federal agents show up at the door of those involved online with child pornography, music piracy, etc...? However, something like that would be a whole different ballgame than something like a worker for a telephone company or ISP violating customer's privacy simply because someone was nosy about their internet usage.

Anyhow, you will probably get all sorts of different answers on this forum. Just my opinion, but if it were me and I were truly concerned about this issue, I would call the telephone company and discuss it with them. After all, if there really are such rumors circulating which could so greatly affect the public's trust in their company/cooperative, not to mention the severe legal ramifications any such activity would mean for the telephone company and/or ISP, then it is probably an issue they need to be made aware of so they can address it with the public and their employees anyhow.

However, if one has proof or feels there is strong evidence to suggest their privacy has been violated in any shape or form by their telephone company and/or ISP...they could simply file a complaint with the (FTC) Federal Trade Commission.

Very helpful. Like I said before I doubt its true, but hear that it was possible none the les. I am just the average Joe,and don't have a clue how anything like that works so I thought I would ask on here. So now let me ask you this, Honest Babe. I put this same topix on her about 3 days ago and when I checked bck, I could see the topic, but when I would click on it ,it would never come up so I could read the comments. Does this mean someone had deleted the topic, and if so, why?

I remember the other topic you are referring to because I replied to it also. The only way I know of that it could have been removed would have been by a moderator at Topix.

At the time I posted my comment to it, I did not see any reason for its removal. The best I remember, there weren't any particular company names or employee names mentioned at that time. However, I was offline after I commented for several hours, so I don't know what could have been posted to it afterwards that could possibly have caused it to be removed.

To the very best of my knowledge, once topics/comments appear on this forum, only Topix administration could be responsible for their removal. An ISP could possibly block a comment from ever making it to the Topix website to begin with, but I don't know of any way a telephone company and/or an ISP could have anything to do with the removal of anything once it makes it onto the Topix website.

By the way, according to past statements by Topix moderators, ALL Topix moderators work at Topix headquarters located in California.

You are exactly right in what you remember! There had only been 3 or 4 posts the last time I saw it, and I believe yours was the last post. However, I do remember seeing where the second post had pretended to be me and had used the name 'interesting' and said something like 'I was only joking'. jdhoe had commented and said something like' I will call my cousin and ask him' Then I think you posted and after that it was removed. Well thanks and like my name, interesting.

So I guess that is what Jdhoe meant when she said that she would have to contact her cousin and find out. Maybe her cousin is the moderator for Jackson co topix. I know one thing for sure . This is Jackson Co. and if there is a moderator, or a way someone at the telephone company can find out who someone is, you can rest assured they have their family and friends that they would tell it to if asked to find out for them.

A moderator at Topix has no way of knowing the identity of anonymous posters.

The only way to LEGALLY obtain the identity of a Topix user from Topix and their ISP would require a court subpoena.

Topix would have to provide the poster's IP address; then, the ISP connected with that IP address would have to provide the name of the person the IP address was registered to. Even then there is no guarantee the registered account owner is the person posting on Topix.

Even police need a subpoena which they obtain by providing proof of reasonable suspicion that something illegal is happening.
