Last August my granddaughter was hit by an uninsured motorist, she was in intensive care for two weeks and almost died. She left the hospital crippled. The dangerous weapon was a car crossing back and forth across the road burning rubber and hit my granddaughter who had moved off the road but was hit head on. The driver was given a citation and went home; my granddaughter went to intensive care.
A woman I met on the uninsured motorist OK forum, husband was hit by an uninsured motorist, he died. Another young woman car was totaled by an uninsured illegal immigrant motorist in Sapulpa; he was given a citation and drove off still uninsured. She now has no car and he never appeared in court and there are many more similar cases.
My granddaughter’s medical bills are going to run over 50,000 dollars, she has a one year old child, the victims compensation act turned her down because the trooper that worked the accident didn’t arrest the guy for reckless driving, but for driving on the wrong side of the road. Not reckless driving?
The citizens of Oklahoma need legislation to protect us when we get in our cars and drive to the grocery store? When an uninsured motorist hits us and leaves us crippled and maimed for life or dead we want justice, we want laws with teeth that will send a message to those that cheat and drive without insurance so they will know that if they drive without insurance they will go to prison
If something isn’t done others will suffer the same agony that my granddaughter is going through with out compensation. Surely this would be a bipartisan bill. Many Oklahomans in this economy can not afford to self insure with uninsured motorist and Med Pay. We shouldn’t have to. We need a law when anyone gets behind the wheel of a vehicle without liability insurance they better think about the possibility of going to jail.

Do our state legislators not give a shit? I have written everyone of them, about 89, maybe they have ulterior motives for not protecting us with some teeth laws, I ask , why wouldn't they? Who are they afraid of? I did receive two responses, offering condolences

the guy that hit my granddaughter was given a citation by a trooper and not jailed for no insurance, don't you all think that should be changed? The trooper didn't arrest the guy because he stated the driver wasn't driving recklessly, driving on the wrong side of the road not driving recklessly? The judge agreed with the trooper explaining the driver could could have taken his eyes off the road and an accident occurred, the law states your eyes will be on the road at all times and both hands on the wheel, that hasn't changed since I was a cop, both need to go back to law school

Affordable Care Act will help the kind of situation you describe as it will supercede the Victims Compensation Act and cover your Grandaughters type of situation. However, Governor Fallin is resisting participating.

Oklahoma says 1 in 4 drivers in Oklahoma are not insured.

This would all well in good but the uninsured person should be punished with more than a ticket. More so when there has be body injuries and property damage. The law needs to stand up for the innocent!

Well, lets first get everyone covered with health/medical. States will make and enforce their various auto insurance laws, but all must be together on ACA, except those bent on going backwards like Fallin and Oklahoma.

Priorties. That poster's primay concern was the cost of medical care for grand-daughter and not qualifying for medical assistance and a $50,000 bill wreaking financial havoc on the family.

But if you donot get a handle to why the granddaughters family is now having such a struggle it will get worst for what you are calling medical care.

The "handle" is ACA and making it better, as the original plan was meant to be, and stopping putting folks like Fallin in office who was well known upfront not to be the best choice but was elected strictly because she was Republican.
