I ride Ace, and we see kids playing near the tracks all the time. Daily I would say. Mainly in Livermore shortly before the Livermore Station. The city needs to do something so that pedestrians can cross safely. There is a community to the left of the tracks, and all of those kids that go to the highschool have to cross the tracks.

Shortly before the Stockton station, there are always people crossing

I'm a train engineer (although not on ACE) and we see kids crossing the tracks, walking on the tracks, even playing chicken with our trains and sadly sometimes paying the ultimate price for their carelessness. Fencing off the entire railroad (like BART does) would be ideal but it's just not practical. As far as someone wanting to commit suicide by train, fencing most likely wouldn't stop them. Grade crossings (where cars cross the railroad), station platforms, etc. still offer that opportunity. Even BART gets a couple suicides each year. My condolences to this young man's family and friends and to the train crew (engineer and conductor) involved too. They are often the forgotten victims in tragedies like this. Very few engineers get through their careers without several traumatic and fatal incidents while they are just trying to do their jobs. It's something totally beyond our control (no swerving of trains of course and it takes as much as a mile to stop!) and haunts us the rest of our careers!
