Ex-Marin woman among activists seized by Israeli commandos

Former Marin resident Kathy Sheetz was among five Bay Area activists who participated in the Gaza-bound flotilla raided by Israeli commandos on Monday that resulted in the death of nine pro-Palestinian activists. Full Story

Part of the power of civil disobedience is that there are consequences to be suffered. Today, across the political spectrum, people expect to break the law, either of or between nations, and get a free pass because of the entitled "righteousness" of their cause. The activists that tree-sat in Berkeley and violated the borders in Iran, the Gaza flotilla, etc., are now facing the clearly foreseeable consequences of their actions.

A round of Darwin awards for all nine! Let's see - organize a flotilla to run a naval blockade of a territory controlled by a radical terrorist group that threatens the annihilation of it's neighboring country. When boarded by Commandos - attack them! Start a fight - and when you lose - whine about how unfair it all is!

"They all knew the risk," (Jane) Jewel said. "They all signed documents about what they wanted to be done with their remains should they get killed." And so - they new exactly what they were getting into!(Crocodile tears aside!)

When dip**** groups like the "Free Gaza Movement" and "Fourteen Friends of Palestine" actually hold a protest of Hamas brutality, rocket attacks and killing of innocent civilians - then maybe I can believe that they actually stand for PEACE!

"It never crossed my mind that they would use their Navy Seals to attack a civilian ship," Jennifer Sheetz said..... hum last I checked Hamas is at war with Israel. Its sad that the Free Gaza Movement put civilians in harms way.

and some people, even knowing the risks, brought their small children on board...It is one thing to be willing to die for a cause. It is quite another to make that decision for a toddler.

This ship was in international waters. Except for an act of war or aggression that violates international law, what right did the Israelis have to "board" the ship at that point? And once the Israelis initiated boarding, why did the people on the ship -- probably genuinely fearful given the Israeli's record on human rights and knowledge surely of the Israeli hatred of anyone professing sympathy with the Palestinians -- not have the right to fear what might happen and defend themselves? The Israelis have said the blockade was to prevent rearmament of Gaza, and made all kinds of inflammatory statements about how the people on that ship were not "humanitarians" but activists bent on supporting Palestinian attacks on Israel, possibly carrying weapons, etc. Has there been any evidence of that since the seizure? Is there a display of armaments seized from the boarded ship? Have the Israelis trotted out specific people aboard that ship with evidence that they are fomenting violence against Israel? Israel brought any attack on its soldiers on itself when it boarded this ship in international waters. Did Israel attempt to diplomatically deal directly with the ship, with Turkey, with any country whose citizens were on it before simply boarding in what appeared to be a potentially fearsome attack?

Yes, Israel offered to take and deliver any onboard supplies but the Armada refused. That is why those on board said they knew they were taking a risk. Would you prefer they allow the ship to enter Israeli waters and then just sink them... As we would have done with any ships forewarned not to proceed.

USA Today, CNN, and many others....try this one..

"To be sure, the commando raid was not the Israelis' initial response. Israel issued warnings and offered to let the vessels land in Israel and have the supplies shipped to Gaza. And granted, too, that keeping weapons out of the hands of Hamas was legitimate cause for establishing a blockade. Israel has every right to protect itself from its enemies."

This woman sounds like the typical Barbara Boxer, Lyn woolsey supporter.

This woman should move to the Gaza if she believed what she is saying.

Stop hating USA & Israel for their beauty & greatness.

Sorry for your emptyness, but attacking Greatness doesn't make you great.

Your comment is not only condescending but way off base.

Perhaps you did NOT read the article.

Ms. Sheetz knew what could happen to her, had specified what was to be done with her remains in a worse case scenario, and proceeded to courageously take ACTION for something she believed in.

Too bad more of us don't do the same .. for WHATever we strongly believe in.

Who SAID they expected a "free pass". They were prepared for the WORST, but they took action for what they believed in.

and:

"The governments of Israel and Egypt on Tuesday also indicated they were considering steps to allow more humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip."

Which is a direct consequence of the brave disobedience and world opinion.

Jennifer may have been surprised, but her mother was prepared for the worst and, as a civilian, took action for what she believed in. The Free Gaza Movement did not PUT Civilians in harms way. Ms. Sheetz and the other CIVILIANS CHOSE to put themselves in harms way FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN.

Oh some do, they scan & spot for illegals crossing our southern border (the minutemen & women) and notify the US Border Patrol.

Others take action by contacting law enforcement when illegals are suspected of illegally working in the US.

And many others contact their elected representatives to toughen the laws against illegal entry and working in the US.

The ship was not 'civilian' and was not 'attacked'. It was boarded for inspection after the captain refused to pull into Ashdod harbor for inspection and transfer of humanitarian goods to Gaza. This was a planned violent attack. The captain preferred violent confrontation over transferring the so-called humanitarian aid to Gaza. This was a war ship, carrying trained, organized militants and weapons.

There is also an internationally enforced blockade on the coast of Lebanon. An of course, Egypt blockades their border with Gaza.

Israel sends millions of dollars worth of aid to Gaza, all the time. Nobody pays attention to that.

These people protest the blockade for one reason only - it is effective at keeps long-range rockets out of Gaza. These people want to arm Hamas to attack Israeli civilians. That's the real reason they are upset. They could care less about humanitarian aide and the plight or Gaza residents.

The only country in the world that takes real humanitarean action on behalf of Palestinian people is Israel. Only Israel doesn't try to create contrived PR events out of it.
