Vallejo fire chief departing for San Ramon fire district
http://www.timesheraldonline.com/news/ci_2268...

Some 20 months after he took the helm of the Vallejo Fire Department, Chief Paige Meyer announced Wednesday his impending departure.

Beginning March 18, Meyer will run the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, a position offering about a 20 percent pay bump and oversight of some 150 sworn firefighters, Meyer said.

"It's bittersweet," Meyer said Wednesday. "It was an opportunity that I wasn't necessarily looking for - it really was the only fire district or fire department that I would have considered leaving Vallejo for. When the opportunity came, it probably came quicker than I thought it would."

The fire district, spanning 155 square miles in Contra Costa County, is run similarly to a city, with its own board of directors, finance and human resources departments, said Meyer. He will step into a position left vacant since December by retiring Chief Richard Price.

"Chief Meyer possesses a unique combination of skills," fire district director and board president Matthew Stamey is quoted in a press release. "He has proven he can lead during economically challenging times and has demonstrated his ability to focus an organization around a core mission in order to best serve the community. We selected an exceptional leader for an exceptional organization."

Meyer, 43, has worked for the Vallejo Fire Department for more than 15 years, plus five years before that in Sunnyvale. He served as Vallejo's interim chief for five months before being permanently hired as chief in November 2011.

Meyer said he was emotionally conflicted about his choice to leave Vallejo at this time. However, he said he was proud he had overcome several challenges during his brief stint as chief, with the help of his firefighters and command staff.

Meyer listed accomplishments including hiring 15 new firefighters, with plans to hire several more, as well as the reopening of a fire company and reorganizing the fire safety division. He added that the department's budget was running $2 million under its spending plan midway through this fiscal year.

City Manager Dan Keen said he is disappointed and sad about Meyer's pending departure.

"(Meyer is) one of the best members of my executive team," Keen said Wednesday. "He's done some amazing things with the department here, particularly as we went through the bankruptcy. I really have been so impressed in my year here, in the creativity and just the general attitude and kind of spirit he brings to the job. It's going to be very, very hard to replace that."

Keen said it was too early to share any definite succession plans following Meyer's departure, saying it will depend somewhat on Meyer's schedule.

"I'll certainly make sure that the department is professionally led throughout whatever transition we go through," Keen said. "I've grown accustomed to having to deal with transitions - that's what I do, and this is another transition that I'll handle."

A 20% pay increase, way to go Chief!
There will be accelerated talent drain in the PD now with the ongoing protests from the ignorant thug families community, now bringing in outside agitators. I fully expect more police than we thought to just say "Fcuk It" and bail one way or another. This town does not support it's police department, the council majority smacking their lips to punish the police union with an imposed contract that will trigger even more loss of officers.

He is going to a place where the residents do not try and reinvent the system because they are jealous of what compensation PS makes. Life will be good for the chief. They don't prioritize non profits, homeless, senior centers and charities above all else. Hmmmmmm, what an evil place?

I looked at several other cities in our county and surrounding ones. We are the ONLY city to proudly proclaim "increasing the affordable housing supply" as a core value. The rest of them endeavor to pinch off the spread of affordable housing, and THEY ARE GRATEFUL that Vallejo wants those vouchers!! No wonder all but one of our senior managers live somewhere else!!! This place is a dumping ground for the root criminal stock that end up parolees coming home eventually!! And then everybody starts bawling about parolee dumping!!! No wonder we came UP in the Forbes ranking, we WANT to be miserable!!! Can anyone believe that?!
Look!!!

Firebug, et al Vibbers must embrace the affordable housing model. They continually promote the non profits, meals on wheels, charities, ect... The ones needing those services the most are affordable housing tenants

LOL!

What an upside down world we live in when Meals on Wheels and the Florence Douglas Senior Center have too much and City of vallejo employees have too little money. If you bozos are against the poor then why encourage Walmart, Winco, and Food for Less to open shop in Vallejo?

Cheapskates and the poor are birds of a feather.

If you are against Walmart, Winco and Food for Less why are you for the poor? Do you want them to shop at Trader Joe's and Nieman Marcus?

Whatever? We (Vallejo) have a council majority that prioritizes non profits and Charities designed to help our affordable housing and section 8 tenants (that grows daily) and pays for it by cutting PS. Meanwhile the Firechief is leaving to administer a department that is not micro managed by unhappy underachievers.

Oh! and the FDC probably serves a few 'old Vallejo' millionaires weekly via Meals on Wheels. Socially it is nice but not a necessity.

Thank god we have the Empress and have killed every attempt to establish some type of waterfront development. Is there a model waterfront on the planet that is as barren and underutilized as ours?

So now you are calling Walmart upscale?

You can't encourage businesses that cater to the poor and cheapskates then turn around and not want poor in this City. Does this imply you just want a City full of cheapskates? If so I doubt tax measures would ever pass here.

(t)urd enragement!
