"Playful as a puppy, she learned to untie shoelaces, rip open Velcro and grab pieces of paper. When bored, she rattled the lock on her cage, hoping to catch Gabrielle's attention.
When happy, she wagged her tail; when displeased, she shrieked.
"Pigs are really smart," said Gabrielle, who starts the fifth grade next year. "They have tons of personality. When she wants to play, she gets all jumpy..."
"Soothingly, she stroked her and spoke quiet words. "It's OK, it's OK," she said. "There you go.""
Yes, there you go, Blueberry, to be crammed into a stock truck -- beaten and dragged this time, instead of lured, as you are used to -- and forced into the kill line at the slaughterhouse. There, terrified by the smell of blood and the screams of other terrified and dying pigs, this once-pampered pet will be hit on the head, swung up by a hook through her legs, have her throat cut, be dipped in scalding water, be eviscerated....and it is unclear at which point in all of that experience this pig will actually die. She will, very likely, live through a good part of it. And she will likely feel a good part of it. The stun gun is not very accurate in these high-speed slaughterhouses. Many animals live until they are flayed, or scalded to death.
How can a child raise a beloved pet and send it to the slaughterhouse. Is this a lesson? I think it is more of a betrayal. That animal has been raised to trust and love humans.
