The two major candidates for California governor head into their final televised showdown tonight with a "woman" problem dogging their campaigns - Republican Meg Whitman for her treatment of her undocumented maid, and Democrat Jerry Brown for a staffer's use of a sexist slur in referring to his opponent.

Did final Meg Whitman-Jerry Brown debate change anything?
Tuesday's California gubernatorial debate between Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown was the last before the election, making it crucial for both candidates.

On the factual level,“Brown won,” says Barbara O’Connor, director of the Institute for Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento. She says Whitman petered out at the end and was “engaged but often not directly responsive to Brokaw’s questions … Brokaw fact-checked her twice.”

If there was a debate winner, it was the moderator, retired NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, a journalist of substance who has followed California politics since his stint as a Los Angeles TV correspondent back when Ronald Reagan was running for governor.
Brokaw interjected with a "fact check" on Whitman that one of us California reporters should have mentioned months ago.
When she again charged that the unemployment rate in California had doubled by the time Brown left the governor's office in 1983, Brokaw pointed out: "It was known as the Ronald Reagan recession." And he listed five other states with Republican governors that had higher unemployment rates than California. "Just for perspective," he said.
Brokaw offered the candidates thoughtful questions that often were blown off, especially by Whitman.
His very first, for example:
John F. Kennedy famously said in his inaugural address that Americans should ask not what their country could do for them, but what they could do for their country. But modern candidates compete by promising voters what they'll do for them. What were Whitman and Brown prepared to ask of the people?
Whitman immediately launched into her stump speech, ignoring the question. She finally got around to briefly saying that voters should support the next governor and be prepared to make "very tough tradeoffs."

Neither of them will make a good Governor because neither of them are going to take a stand on illegal immigration. The only way we are going to get the state back on track is to quit draining taxpayer resources and money on illegal immigrants. Its too easy for them to collect state disability benefits and healthcare. Its draining on tax dollars.

Please - Who is in Meg's back pocket ?

You don't not vote for 28 years of your life (offer no explanation) and then decide that a political career is suddenly interesting and spend millions of your own money unless you have a serious ulterior motive ... She is VERY creepy - hopefully people who don't share her income bracket will have the good sense not to fall into her snares.

Looks like Texas gas and oil rigs are sitting in her back pocket - she obviously has no concern as to how climate change is effecting our ability to survive - But you can bet your..... she keeps her investments above sea level ...

Meg lost her third debate. Good old Jerry owned that podium and gave concise logical answers. He looked brilliant and professional as ever. It's easy to see why he is so well liked in most parts of the golden state. I found out recently prior to being our states Atty Gen he was a very popular mayor up north. He does have a good grasp of the states current events and we need that in a leader. Experience shows. Where was megs answers? She was floudering around trying to recall what answers she thinks viewers will accept. She must have been one sadsack manager or boss at ebay. She simply isn't ready for prime time. He is much better prepared and we can't use another trainee with bushels of bad ideas recycled from bush the worst President ever. Meg will cause more gridlock and destroy more jobs and lives because of it.
Yup. Took the words right out of my mouth. I saw the last 2 debates w friends who like politics and we all agree Jerry Brown is right on the issues that matter to us. Ms Megabucks and her hideous antichoice BFF Carly are poster children for the sordid type of corporate corruption that tanked our economy under King Bush. That would explain why Repub knuckleheads like that nasty plutocratic liar. These women are way, way too far right for a deeply blue state and wont get much public support for a radical right agenda. Jerry Brown rules and he'll bring the positive changes that will save the day for the working man!

Really - what can a governor do about ILLEGALS? It is the job of the Federal Gov't and they are a huge FAIL! One reason alone to vote out Boxer.

With no jobs, how do you expect to survive in CA? As California is struggling, the last thing it needs is to force more expensive and BS regulations on businesses that the other 49 States do not require! What is to stop these businesses from leaving CA?

Plus - remember this is some "ELITIST" group up in Sacramento (CARB) that is telling us that we "need" to start paying more for gas and per mile of driving - who the hell can afford that? And what about all the studies done by that CARB Sciencist that lied about having a PhD!

COME ON PEOPLE!

Interesting event. Hard to call it a debate in the true sense. Brown projected a strong image of leadership. He had more detailed facts and knowledge and was in command of the issues. Meg was slow off the line and seemed tired as she dodged and waffled. He won it hands down.

<quoted text> Very well said, thank you for writing what more than a few are thinking! Well poor megabuck Whitman already paid over 130 -140 million? Doesn't she deserve to have the job she paid for? ;-)(sarcasm just kidding all!) I didn't realize she was a carpet bagger -(or actually more of a tea bagger?) from NY. If megabuck wins, the middle class in our state will lose a lot more than we did under a relatively moderate Arnold. She and her evil sidekick Carly Frauderini are up to no good you can mark my words. Don't trust any of these secretive corporate conservatives. Job outsourcing and special favors for the top are the price we will pay.
Yes you might have to actually pay for all your great programs instead of lobbying congress to suck the rest of the nation dry as well.

Jerry Brown:‘A Legacy of Failure?’
We find Meg Whitman's attack ad fails to tell the truth.
July 1, 2010

Summary
Republican Meg Whitman is making false claims about Democrat Jerry Brown’s "lifetime in politics" in an attack ad. The two are battling to become the next governor of California.
• The ad claims that "crime soared" while Brown was mayor of Oakland. That’s false. The total number of crimes actually went down by more than 13 percent.
• Also false is the ad’s claim that Brown "damaged the school system so badly the state had to take it over." As mayor, Brown had almost no control over the school district, which was run instead by an elected school board.
